Description
Content
Folios 315-316. Draft of two letters from the Poor Law Board to Henry Saunders, Clerk to the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union, concerning the inspection of the Union by Mr Graves [John Thomas Graves] on 25 April 1848; the first letter informs the guardians that some medical officers rarely visit the paupers in person but devolve their duties onto assistants. Article 199 of the Consolidated Order requires medical officers to attend the workhouse personally. The guardians should inform the Medical Officers of this rule. Substitutes should attend only when medical officers are unavoidably prevented from attending the paupers. The second letter states that the bedding in the Vagrant Ward is in a foul state. There is want of soft water on the premises. The young men's day room is ill-lighted and ill-ventilated. The 'Insane paupers' are not separate from other inmates so are liable to be teased, ill-used and cheated of their rations. The Board requests the guardians to remedy these defects as far as is practicable. Paper Number: 13389/1848. Poor Law Union Number 530. Counties: Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
