Description

Folio 7: Medical and surgical journal of His Majesty's Convict Ship Moffat between the 30 April 1836 and the 5 September [1836] during which time the said ship has been employed in carrying 399 prisoners from England to New South Wales.

Folios 8-9: Henry Healy, aged 26, Prisoner; disease or hurt, erysipelas. Put on sick list, 7 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 31 May 1836. He had struck his leg a few days previously and slightly abraded the skin on the centre of the shin. He then complained of a painful swelling in the groin while receiving medicine for catarrh. The leg became stiff and swollen.

Folios 9-10: William Reid, aged 26, Prisoner, 'a black'; disease or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis. Put on sick list, 6 May 1836, at sea. Died, 20 May 1836. Described as 'a tall emaciated and unhealthy looking person labouring under depression of spirits – was transmitted from Jamaica and has been in the hulk at home for some time'.

Folios 10-11: Robert Alexander, aged 28, Prisoner; disease or hurt, apoplexia [atrob]. Put on sick list, 8 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 28 May 1836. 'A short thick necked, larged headed man with large overhanging contracted eyebrows and dark complexion'.

Folios 11-12: Richard Powell, aged 32, Prisoner, 'a black'; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 12 May 1836, at sea. Died, 16 May 1836. 'A tall lean narrow chested person', he had been a horse breaker and suffered severely from a kick in the side. Had been brought from Jamaica under similar circumstances to William Reid.

Folios 12-13: Thomas Goddard, aged 21, Prisoner; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 23 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 20 June 1836. 'A spare thin lad with a chest very narrow at the top, complexion rather dark, clear skin and large eyes'. Had rigors two days previously and had been unwell since.

Folio 13: Jonathan Hollnighton, aged 32, Prisoner; disease or hurt, intermittent quotidian [fever]. Put on sick list, 26 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 10 July 1836. He had been one of the 'mud gang' at Woolwich Yard for several months and had been employed in cleaning out a drain for 6 weeks. He had been in good health until the first paroxysm came on the 24 May.

Folios 14, 15 and 16: James Luff, aged 24, Prisoner; disease or hurt, peri pneumonia. Put on sick list, 29 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 10 July 1836. 'A tall healthy looking lad' he had previously suffered less severe attacks.

Folio 15: Ben Middleton, aged 29, Prisoner; disease or hurt, synochus. Put on sick list, 30 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 26 June 1836. 'A stout healthy young man, by trade a blacksmith'.

Folio 16: Arthur Robertson, aged 52, Prisoner; disease or hurt, fractured clavicle (scapular end). Put on sick list, 12 July 1836, at sea. Discharged, 28 August 1836. 'A stout man but of weak intellect', he was forcibly driven against a post a few days earlier but felt little pain until he went to bed. The left clavicle was fractured at its outer end, where it joined the scapula at the shoulder. When discharged he had 'regained almost the whole use of the limb'.

Folio 17: James Morley, aged 23, Prisoner; disease or hurt, intermittent tertian. Put on sick list, 12 May 1836, at sea. Discharged, 26 July 1836. 'A big heavy but bloated looking lad', he had complained three days earlier of cough and pain in the chest. He was discharged on 22 May but returned on 26 June, was discharged again on 3 July, returned again on 11 July and finally discharged 26 July 1836.

Folios 18-19: George Hollingberg, aged 18, Prisoner; disease or hurt, anasarca. Put on sick list, 14 July 1836, at sea. Discharged, 26 August 1836. A German by birth, he had been in confinement for some time before being embarked. On 15 July the surgeon notes that scurvy is beginning to appear.

Folio 20: Ben Middleton, [aged 29, Prisoner]; disease or hurt, intermittent tertian. Put on sick list, 23 July 1836. Discharged, 28 August 1836. Since being discharged on 26 June he had declined in health and had experienced four paroxysms of ague on alternate days.

Folios 20-21: Edward Jones, aged 20, Prisoner; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 26 July 1836, at sea. Discharged, 15 August 1836. 'Dark complexioned and rather small of his age', he had been employed on board in drawing water and cleaning the decks. He was at sea prior to becoming a prisoner.

Folios 22-23: Samuel Dunn, aged 20, Prisoner; disease or hurt, simple fever. Put on sick list, 4 June 1836, at sea. Died, 23 July 1836. 'A countryman of fair complexion and full habit', complained of headache, general pain and feeling cold, he had been ailing a day or two. His bedding was made wet during rough weather when water came in at the port and there were several periods of bad weather during his illness, which made him worse. He seemed to slowly improve until 22 July and died suddenly at 7am on 23 July while telling the hospital attendant that he was feeling better.

Folio 24: Jonathan Smith, aged 50, Prisoner; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 15 July 1836, at sea. Sent to hospital, 2 September 1836. Smith had been in Newgate for some time but was only in the hulk for a few days before joining the Moffat on 20 April. He complained of sore gums early in the voyage but since his teeth were extremely bad his symptoms were attributed to that cause. His gums did not seem to get worse until he complained with pain and stiffness about his knee.

Folio 25: William Ford, aged 19, Prisoner; disease or hurt, scurvy. Put on sick list, 8 August 1836. Sent to hospital, 2 September 1836. 'A stout healthy active lad’, he had been a sailor and was employed as a boatswain's mate, as such he received extra daily allowance of wine and lemon juice. His gums were tender, swollen and disposed to bleed and one of his thighs was swollen and blue in the ham. His case became the worst case of scurvy aboard and when landed at Sydney he was very weak, his thighs much enlarged, painful hard and discoloured.
