1 individual petition (the prisoner) and 1 collective petition (18 associates of the prisoner) on behalf of William Clapson, farm bailiff, convicted at Kent Winter Assizes at Maidstone on 15 December 1828 for embezzlement of £2 16 shillings from the Reverend Dr Steavens. Grounds for clemency: Clapson claimed that the alleged embezzlement was in fact a straightforward dispute between Steavens, his employer and himself over the proceeds of the sale of livestock. Gaoler's Report: character good. Initial sentence: 7 years' transportation. Annotated: nil. FO48
