2 collective petitions (William Churchward and Elizabeth Churchward, parents of the prisoner and 17 inhabitants of London City and the suburbs) on behalf of George Churchward convicted at Surrey Summer Assizes 1829 sitting at Croydon for burglary, property of George Dyson. There are 2 letters from George Dyson to Peel supporting the appeal for the prisoner's sentence to be reduced. Grounds for clemency: the parents' efforts to bring up their son in a fit manner were widely acknowledged no 'firearms or other weapons of destruction' were found on Churchward on his arrest, his 2 associates in the crime were 'well-known bad characters' one of whom had served on the hulks. Gaoler's report: the prisoner had a record of previous convictions. Initial sentence: death commuted to transportation for life. Annotated: nil. FO47
