Folio 96. Draft letter from WGL [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary of the Poor Law Commission], to Riley, [J Riley, Guardian and Auditor of the Basford Union]. In response to Riley's letter of 24 March 1840, the Poor Law Commission have 'forwarded by tonight's post a copy of a security for the repayment of the [money] advanced by Mr Smith' [Samuel Smith and Co, Bankers of Nottingham] to the Basford guardians. He notes that only £300 is borrowed for Carlton, although the sum in the schedule is £317 6s 10¾d, but he presumes the remainder has been paid out of the rates. Paper Number: 3629/B/1840. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
