2 individual petitions (Elizabeth Bell, prisoner's wife) and 3 collective petitions (71 inhabitants of Trowbridge, Wiltshire giving occupations, 58 tradesmen of City of London and 11 jury members) and accompanying letter from M Fitzgerald on behalf of John Bell, woollen manufacturer, convicted at the Old Bailey in April 1834 for receiving stolen wool belonging to Messrs Smith and Duff. Gaolers report: former character irreproachable - highly respectable connexions. Grounds for clemency: known as respectable businessman for over 30 years, irreproachable character, sight impaired, aged 53, jury recommended mercy. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation commuted to 7 years imprisonment (petition of Elizabeth Bell states 3 and a half years imprisonment). Annotated: not sufficiently long in penitentiary. AT 5
