1 collective petition (133 people from Yarm, Yorkshire and Stockton upon Tees, Durham) and 1 accompanying letter from John Stewart Kipling on behalf of Thomas Blakelock, journeyman tailor convicted with Thomas Williams at the Yorkshire Quarter Sessions in Northallerton on 31 December [1833] for stealing a joint of meat from the shop window of George Laidler, butcher in Yarm on 7 November. Gaoler's report: prisoner has been convicted of a misdemeanour and several times imprisoned; connected with a bad gang of thieves. Grounds for clemency: only witnesses 3 children aged 8 and 9 who claimed Thomas Williams stole meat, previous honest character, respectable industrious parents who run own business, living at home with parents who are supporting him while unemployed so no need to steal from poverty, many willing to reemploy him, no character witnesses called at trial. Initial sentence; 7 years transportation. Gaolers report: connected to bad gang of thieves. Annotated: nil. AT 3
