1 individual petition (Sarah Stringle, prisoner's wife) on behalf of William Stringle, labourer and informer employed by John Biers, Inspector of Hawkers' Licences, convicted of receiving a sum of money to connive at an offence on 6 September 1826. Grounds for clemency: has a wife, 6 children and father dependent on him, did not receive £10 promised for informing against stage coach drivers who overloaded their coaches, was falsely charged to keep him in Gloucester until sufficient people could be got together to create a riot and assault Stringle. He returned to London and frequently attended the police station to give information but was not apprehended then, magistrates reluctant to commit him because too long a time had elapsed, the prosecution was not for justice but vindictiveness, he had never been in prison before. There is also a warrant of commitment, a summons to appear previous to conviction, and a warrant to apprehend after conviction. Initial sentence: 1 month imprisonment, and £50 fine. Annotated: nil.
