1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (31 tradesmen and burgesses of Shrewsbury) on behalf of James Judson hay carter, convicted at Shrewsbury Summer Assizes on 30 July 1828 of stealing a watch on 28 July 1828, property of Charles Williams. There are also letters from Robert Dixon transferring the documents, a deposition from the prisoner, from S Corbett transferring the petition, and a character reference with 9 signatories. Grounds for clemency: age only 18, no opportunity to prepare a defence, wife now pregnant, good character, first offence, took watch from prosecutor who was drunk. Initial sentence: 7 years' transportation. Gaoler's report: the prisoner's character and disposition good, has not been in prison before this conviction and former conduct of life good. Annotated: Refer this to the judge; let him go to the penitentiary. KN14
