At an inspection of prisoners at Kilmainham Prison on 26 October 1839, the Surgeon objected to taking Patrick Stack as being unfit from age and debility, but he was persuaded by Dr Rooney to take him on board on trial for a few days. He was almost constantly confined to bed, suffering debility, loss of appetite, gastrodynia and a troublesome cough.
Folio 4: Thomas Lane, aged 18, Convict; disease or hurt, scrofula. Put on sick list, 30 October 1839. Returned to Kilmainham, 6 November 1839. Had been at Kilmainham for several months having been rejected for transportation by two other surgeons on grounds of ill health, the surgeon was persuaded to take him on board for a few days on trial. He is described as 'small diminutive appearance, sallow complexion, emaciated extremities, protuberant belly, great enlargement of the parotid and sub maxillary glands, red and inflamed eyelids, foul tongue, decayed teeth and spongy gums'.

Among other symptoms his tongue was 'loaded with a yellowish brown fur, with a circular ulcer about the size of a sixpence' which he attributed to the use of tobacco. He was undergoing transportation for the second time which caused great anxiety and depression, and was said to be 'excessively addicted' to the use of 'ardent spirits' making him appear prematurely aged. During his illness he suffered delirium, coma and incontinence and was treated with mercurial ointments rubbed into his limbs while he was restricted to a table spoonful of barley water every quarter hour for drink.
