Folio 1: Printed instructions on completing the journal and nosological tables. With a note pasted on it, 'A very good journal with sketches and photographs' dated 31 January 1879, signed [JW].
Folios 2-3: Richard Curtis, aged 23, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 31 December 1877. Discharged, 7 January 1878.
Folio 3: John [Horswell], aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, syphilis primary. Put on sick list, 18 December 1877, at Port Said. Discharged, 6 February 1878.
Folios 3-4: Henry Bird, aged 39, Private Marine; disease or hurt, bronchitis. Put on sick list, 26 January 1878. Discharged, 10 February 1878. With a 'Clinical chart of temperature etc' pasted on to folio 3.
Folios 4-5: Frederick Basten, aged 30, Private Marine; disease or hurt, wound of cornea. Put on sick list, 24 January 1878, at [Ayas] Bay, Beirut. Discharged, 15 February 1878. Struck in the eye by a reed while shooting in a marsh.
Folios 5-7: John Bennett, aged 33, Leading Stoker; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 3 January 1878. Sent to the Royal Naval Hospital at Malta by HMS Raleigh, 13 March 1878, and later invalided. With a 'Clinical chart of temperature etc' pasted on to folio 5.

Folios 18-56: Surgeon's general remarks. [Note: several pages of the General Remarks appear to be bound in the wrong order]. Describes the country surrounding Beirut, the old and new roads, ancient history of the area and surrounding towns. The town of Tripoli [Lebanon], where there were Bulgarian Muslim refugees, is described.
Folio 19: Inserted contact print from original photograph showing a view over Tripoli with a large fortress [the Citadel de Raymond de Saint-Gilles or Qala'at Sanjil?] in the background.
Folio 21: 'Plan of Alexandretta', coloured sketch plan with key.
Folios 19-22: The town of Alexandretta [Iskenderun, Turkey] is described in some detail, the European part of town, the camel drivers, the marshes surrounding the town and ancient remains.
Folios 23-24: describe a landing place on the Gulf of Iskenderun near the castle of Ayas, the country nearby and the castle itself. [continued folio 34]

Folios 25-26: Appear to be a continuation of the remarks from folio 22 concerning caravans at Alexandretta [Iskenderun] and goes on to describe the Aleppo road.
Folio 26: Inserted contact print from original photograph showing a view of Port Said, Egypt. [At folio 25 is a page with the inscription 'Port Said, February 24 1878', possibly the backing of the original photograph].
Folios 27-32: Are out of place and describe their arrival at Gallipoli on 2 April or May, the town is filled with Bulgarian refugees and small pox is prevalent. The island of Marmara is visited and described. From June 28 to 16 July they were at Besika Bay and from 20 July to 25 July off the Boulair lines. The surgeon spent 28 July to 13 September helping to attend the sick Turkish troops at Boulair. They also visit Constantinople, Therapia, where there was a large encampment of Turkish prisoners who had been released by the Russians, the Black Sea and the town of Bourgas, where Russian troops were being disembarked, and then returned to Constantinople. The sick cases for the year are also reviewed.

Folios 34-35: Continue the comments from folio 24, they return to Beirut on 1 March and receive orders to join Admiral Hornby in the sea of Marmara. The town of Izmit is described. On 1 April they arrived at Rodosto [Tekirdag] which had recently been occupied by [Russian] troops.
Folio 36: Sketch map showing the lines near Boulair and Fort Sultan.
Folios 36-56: 'Notes taken at Boulair lines August 1877'. On 28 July 1878 Mr Trevan joined two surgeons employed by the Stafford House Committee as a volunteer tending to the sick Turkish troops at the Boulair Lines. Describes the earthworks, military camp, water supply, deployment of troops, their clothing, rations, poor medical care, the sick treated in a mosque and private homes at Gallipoli.
Folios 43-49 cover the diseases treated at the Boulair Lines, scurvy was very prevalent and is discussed in some detail.
Folios 49-56 discuss the position of the camps of the battalions and their water supply in detail referring to the sketch map on folio 36.
Folios 57-63: Blank.
