- Folio 226. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board to William Powell, Clerk to the Guardians of the Newport Pagnell Poor Law Union, in reply to his letter of 21 October concerning the proposal to construct a sewer in the High Street at Newport Pagnell. The surveyors of the highways cannot be compelled to make a main drain or sewer where none exists, although they must scour all open ditches and water courses along the sides of the highways, under 11& 12 Vict c 123 s 6. The guardians can compel the removal of filth in this case under the Nuisances Removal Act, but they cannot construct, or cause to be constructed, any main drains or sewers. Paper Number: 37408/1853. Poor Law Union Number 23. Counties: Buckinghamshire.
