Description

Folio 30: James Bryan, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt; accidental discharge of a fowling piece, several shot were lodged in the left thigh, fourteen were extracted, many more appear to have struck the thigh and particularly on the upper part near the inguen where there is much pain and considerable tension; put on sick list, 9 September 1805, St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland. Discharged 2 October 1805 to duty in St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland.

Folios 30-31: Thomas Brin, aged 28, seaman; sick or hurt; severe pain of the head and right side about the sixth and seventh rib. Breathing difficult. Frequent and contracted pulse, tongue white and considerable thirst; put on sick list, 19 September 1805, St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland. Discharged 7 October 1805 to duty in St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland.

Folio 31: John Braden, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt; fracture of the second metatarsal bone of the right foot, by a cable which was triced up to the deck, giving way, and falling on it; put on sick list, 10 October 1805, St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland. Discharged 18 November 1805 to duty at sea.

Folios 31 and 33: William Dennett, aged 34, seaman; sick or hurt; fracture of the great and two next toes of the right foot by the butcher’s lock falling on them; put on sick list, 19 October 1805, St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland. Discharged 6 December 1805 to duty at Spithead.

Folio 32: Edward Allen, aged 32, seaman; sick or hurt; violent efforts to vomit with considerable pain at the scrobicul cord, skin cold and clammy with violent and general tremor; put on sick list, 24 September 1805, St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland. Discharged 3 October 1805 to duty in St John’s Harbor, Newfoundland.

Folio 32: Michael Dryberry, aged 28, seaman; sick or hurt; left thumb much bruised to the extent of both phalanges, considerable ecchymosis under the nail, the injury occasioned by a 24 pound shot falling on it; put on sick list, 7 November 1805, at sea. Discharged 7 November 1805 to duty at sea.

Folio 32: James Whisker, aged 26, seaman; sick or hurt; slow irregular pulse with full stroke, eyes heavy and watery with severe pain of the head, skin hot; put on sick list, 29 October 1805, at sea. Discharged 14 November 1805 to duty at sea.

Folios 32 and 35: Samuel Garrett, aged 55, seaman; sick or hurt; the teguments of the third and part of the second phalanx of the middle finger of the left hand detached, so as to expose the periosteum, by being jammed in a tackle block; put on sick list, 12 Nov 1805, at sea. Discharged 14 November 1805 to duty at sea.

Folio 33: John McGrath, aged 40, seaman; sick or hurt; slight phlegmon on the superior and outer part of the right thigh which was perfectly removed on the 19th instant and was discharged to duty; put on sick list, 31 October 1805, at sea. Discharged 25 December 1805 to duty at Spithead.

Folio 34: Major Harris, aged 22, seaman; sick or hurt; a wound of the scalp about the centre of the right parietal bone, inflicted by a bone, with a thin light tin fish slice; put on sick list, 18 November 1805, at sea. Discharged 1 December 1805 to duty at Spithead.

Folios 34 and 39: John Cummings, aged 29, seaman; sick or hurt; excessive pain in the stomach and intestines, incapacity of retaining anything in the stomach, smart pain in walking or standing erect. He attributed these symptoms to having swallowed in the preceeding days, 19 or 20 clasp pen knives and one pen knife case, the latter of which was soon rejected, but all the former retained; put on sick list, 6 December 1805, at Spithead.

Folio 35: Patrick Duffy, aged 46, seaman; sick or hurt; index finger of the left hand much swollen of a lurid red and painful, the hand tense, and arm [?], on the anterior of the index finger between the 1st and 2nd joint there is an opening which he made last night with a sail needle discharging icherous matter; put on sick list, 21 November 1805, at sea. Discharged 10 December 1805 to duty at Spithead.

Folio 36: Philip Woodland, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt; severe cough with difficult expectoration pain in the course of the sternum; put on sick list, 14 December 1805, at sea. Discharged 16 January 1806 to duty in the Downs.

Folios 36-37: Thomas White, aged 24, seaman; sick or hurt; cough without expectoration, sense of debility, feeble pulse, cold skin, and florid below the eyes; put on sick list, 18 December 1805, at sea. Discharged 12 January 1806 to duty in the Downs.

Folio 37: Samson Jefferies, aged 28, seaman; sick or hurt; pain at the scrobicul cord with violent ineffective efforts to vomit, no other indication of disease; put on sick list, 29 December 1805, at sea. Discharged 21 January 1806 to duty at sea.

Folio 37: John Walker, aged 21, private marine; sick or hurt; swelling of the right axillary glands attended with considerable pain, irritation and nausea, numbness of the right leg and side; put on sick list, 4 January 1806, Spithead. Discharged 12 February 1806 to duty in the River Elbe.

Folio 38: Ambrose Holland, aged 24, seaman; sick or hurt; chancres of different sizes on the prepuce; put on sick list, 7 January 1806, in the Downes. Discharged 7 February 1806 to duty in the River Elbe.

Folio 38: Thomas Aldridge, aged 28, seaman; sick or hurt; abdomen enlarged and increases toward evening, the knees and legs then become painful, the feet swelled and the toes are spasmodically affected; put on sick list, 21 January 1806, in the River Elbe. Discharged 10 February 1806 to duty in the River Elbe.

Folio 38: John Braden, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt; cough, headache, thirst, full pulse with alternate rigors and heat; put on sick list, 22 January 1806, in the River Elbe. Discharged 4 February 1806 to duty in the River Elbe.

Folio 39: James Smith, aged 28, seaman; sick or hurt; indolent glandular enlargement in the left inguen; put on sick list, 23 January 1806, in the River Elbe.

Folio 40: Philip Woodland, aged 30, seaman; sick or hurt; very acute pain in the right hypochord intense heat of the skin, excessive thirst and intense pain of the head, violent tremor, vertigo and vomiting; put on sick list, 27 January 1806, in the River Elbe. Discharged 16 February 1806 at sea.

Folios 40-41: William Pullen, aged 21, midshipman; sick or hurt; pain in the left ischium of both ankles with selling of the latter, no fever; put on sick list, 29 January 1806, in the River Elbe. Discharged 16 February 1806 at sea.
