- Folios 198-199. Letter from Thomas Matthias Spencer, Relieving Officer, Eastern District, Mansfield Union, to the Poor Law Board, concerning bills presented to him by the overseers of Scarcliffe and Upper Langwith which need paying. These overseers have given coals as relief in kind to the infirm and permanent paupers for many years, the amount being repaid to them by the relieving officers. The auditor has questioned whether this course of action is legal. Spencer enquires if submitting such expenses in his accounts will be or not be accepted and paid. Annotated: has this practice to which this communication calls attention, in any way come under your notice. It cannot be seen at present that how this can be considered relief legally given by overseers. Return Bills and reply accordingly, request to see the draft. Paper Number: 2257/1855. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
