Description

Folio 7: Daniel Murphy; disease or hurt, complained of pain in back, loins and limbs from having been a long time in the water when the Fox Cutter sunk. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 29 July 1797 to duty.

Folio 7: William Lovett; disease or hurt, complained of pain in back, loins and limbs from having been a long time in the water when the Fox Cutter sunk. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 29 July 1797 to duty.

Folio 7: Thomas Kelly, aged about 29, marine; disease or hurt, received a contusion of his side by a fall which fractured two of the costa. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 2 August 1797 to duty.

Folios 7-13: John Willson, aged about 29, seaman; disease or hurt, received a wound of the breast and shoulder by a musket ball passing through the breast and scapula a large haemorrhage came on which was suppressed by compression. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1797 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 7-14: Lieutenant Weatherhead, aged about 22; disease or hurt, received a wound in the stomach by a raged ball, in great pain with violent vomiting of green and yellow fluids. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Died 30 July 1797.

Folios 7, 9 - 12, 14- 16: Admiral Horatio Nelson; disease or hurt, compound fracture of the right arm by a musket ball passing through a little above the elbow an artery divided the arm was immediately amputated. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 20 August 1797 to HMS Seahorse.

Folios 7-16: James Holden or Holding, aged about 27, seaman; disease or hurt, a wound of the breast and compound fracture of the right arm close to the shoulders by a musket ball passing through the pectoral muscle and afterwards through the arm which shattered the bone very much and divided the humeral artery. Amputation was immediately performed. The tournequet could not be applied, compression was of very little use on dividing the artery. A large haemorrhage took place which was immediately stopped by taking up the arteries the stump was dressed and the patient put to bed. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1797 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 7-19: William Harrison, aged about 30, seaman; disease or hurt, received a compound fracture of the left arm by a musket ball striking the radius, the ball was extracted four inches above the wound several pieces of bone extracted. Put on sick list, 25 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1797 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 8-13: Thomas Vincin, aged about 27, seaman; disease or hurt, a gunshot wound of the thigh by a ball passing through the adductor magnus femoris muscle an emollient cataplasm was applied. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1797 to duty.

Folios 8-26: James Harrison, aged about 32, marine; disease or hurt, was brought on board from Santa Cruz, wounded by a musket ball passing through the gluteous major muscle and injuring the trochanter major. The ball was extracted. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1797 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 8-26: Patrick McKinna, aged 27, seaman; disease or hurt, a wound of the loins by a musket ball. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1796 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 8-26: James McKinna, aged 29, seaman; disease or hurt, received two gunshot wounds. One through the left knee which fractured part of the patella. The other on the fore part of the right thigh where a ragged ball was extracted by the foreceps near three inches deep. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1796 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 8-26: William Cardal or Cardell, aged 30, marine; disease or hurt, a contused wound of the leg by a spent grape shot. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Left on board for cure.

Folios 8-21: Samuel Becket, aged about 25, marine; disease or hurt, a compound fracture of the right leg very much shattered, bad scorbutic habit, great haemorrhage. Amputation was immediately recommended but would not submit the haemorrhage was stopped. The limb placed in a easy position. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Died 9 August 1797.

Folios 8-27: John Clarke, aged about 23, seaman; disease or hurt, was brought on board with a compound fracture of the right leg by two musket balls. There being three wounds. The limb was placed in a relaxed position and a poultice applied. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 18 August 1797 invalided on to HMS Seahorse.

Folios 8-27: John Cooper or Cowper, aged about 21, marine; disease or hurt, was brought on board with a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula of the right leg. The ball was extracted the limb laid straight and an emollient poultice applied. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 18 August 1797 invalided on to HMS Seahorse.

Folio 9: John Hoskins, aged about 25, seaman; disease or hurt, gunshot wound of the ankle fracture of the os colcis. Put on sick list, 27 July 1797. Discharged [?].

Folios 9-13: William Jones, aged about 26, marine; disease or hurt, received a gunshot wound through the biceps muscle of the right arm. An emollient cataplasm was applied. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 18 August 1797 to duty.

Folios 9-26: John Collins, aged about 18, seaman; disease or hurt, contused wound of the leg. Put on sick list, 26 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1796 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folios 10-18: Florence Mahany, aged about 24, marine; disease or hurt, was brought on board wounded in the head. I found a ragged musket ball sticking in the cranium in the left parietal bone which I extracted found the cranum depressed and extracted eight pieces greatest part the inner lamella, the dura mater appeared uninjured and no bad symptoms whatever had come on. Put on sick list, 27 July 1797. Died 10 August 1797.

Folios 11-12: Thomas Coshings, aged about 27, seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 28 July 1797. Discharged 1 August 1797 to duty.

Folio 11-12: Hugh Crig; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 28 July 1797. Discharged 4 August 1797 to duty.

Folio 12: Thomas March, seaman; disease or hurt, abscess of the finger. Put on sick list, 28 July 1797. Discharged 12 August 1797 to duty.

Folios 12-16: William Carrick, aged about 23, seaman; disease or hurt, received a large wound of the head on 15 June, a large portion of the teguments were detached, it had got well, it now broke out in a large foul ulcer the cranium was bare 2 or 3 inches. Frequent vomiting. Put on sick list, 28 July 1797. Discharged 17 August 1797 to Gibraltar Hospital.

Folio 13: Mr Mathews, aged 42, Carpenter; disease or hurt, complained of pain in his head, back and loins. Put on sick list, 29 July 1797. Discharged 5 August 1797.

Folios 13-14: Lieutenant Compton; disease or hurt, feverish cold. Put on sick list, 30 July 1797. Discharged 3 August 1797.

Folios 13-15: Michael Newland, aged about 25, seaman; disease or hurt, complained of pain in his hips and legs. Put on sick list, 29 July 1797. Discharged 4 August 1797.
