Folios 17-19: Surgeon's general remarks.
Folio 17: Remarks for 1870. Very briefly describes the ship, states that she travelled to Gibraltar and that there were 14 cases, none of them remarkable.
Folios 17-18: Remarks for 1871. Summarises the journey from Malta to China.
Folios 18-19: Have a translation of Chinese proclamation against missionaries that had been posted all over Canton in July 1871. The translation supplied by Mr [Baker] of the Consulate refers to barbarians attempting to seduce women to their sect and distribute a poisonous drug called 'fairy powder' which causes swelling of the stomach, and goes on to say that 'the converts and barbarian devils will be bound and carried to the ancestral temple where 200 dollars reward will be given for their capture and they will be cut into morsels by the painful and lingering process'. The other half of folio 19 summarises the disease in 1871.
