Description
Content
Folios 201-204. Letter from John Walthew, Liverpool, to the Poor Law Commission, requesting to be considered for the position of one of the district registrars for Liverpool under the new Registration Act, 1837. His brother, who is one of the honorary overseers of the parish, has informed him that several are needed. Walthew states that is qualified by virtue of the fact that he is 26 years old, married and a native of the town, and has a perfect knowledge of 'all the localities of the place'. He encloses a letter of recommendation from a friend. Letter included from Eph Knapper, to the Commission, supporting Walthew's application, stating that Walthew is the brother of Knapper's good friend William Walthew. He refers in the letter to other signatories, 'being Gentlemen all respectable parishioners and rate payers well respected for industry, sobriety and integrity' [not included]. Annotated: Mr Power, 30 May 1837. Testimonials returned to Mr Walthew 30 September. Paper Number: 4774/A/1837. Poor Law Union Number 220. Counties: Lancashire.
