Description
Content
Folios 190-195. Note stating that the for the correspondence of Mr Frankland Lewis [Thomas Frankland Lewis, Poor Law Commissioner], and Mr Power [Alfred Power], Assistant Poor Law Commissioner; to see Mr Powers papers for 1837. Included are: Rough draft copy letter from A Power, [Alfred Power], Assistant Poor Law Commission, to Edwin Chadwick, [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. He forwards correspondence from James Eckersley, member of the Liverpool Select Vestry. He had escorted Power on his recent visit to the Liverpool Workhouse. It is a large workhouse having 1,780 inmates at that time, but needing some amendments for their classification. Powers gives an extract from the vestry minutes in which they state that the classification of paupers is necessary. The vestry has the confidence of the parishioners and Powers believes that until the election process of guardians in large towns/cities has been made easier he would not recommend establishing a board of guardians there unless called for within the parish itself. He asks if several copies of the annual reports and sets of large workhouse plans be sent to James Eckersley, Parish Officer, Liverpool. Letter from Eckersley to Power in regard to the classification of paupers and the necessary alterations to the workhouse this will require. He asks for suggestions and a 'Copy of the Book' by the Commission, so that any alterations made would be agreeable to them should Liverpool later come under their authority. Rough draft copy letter from Power to Eckersley, thanking him for a copy of the Liverpool accounts. He states he has no doubts that the plan to alter the workhouse to best classify paupers will result in a 'great advantage'. The Commission will provide any advice Liverpool feels they might need. He states that he has asked that copies of the annual reports and sets of large workhouse plans be sent to Eckersley. Paper Number: 3123/A/1837. Poor Law Union Number 220. Counties: Lancashire.
