Folios 152-154. Letter from John Mackinlay, Secretary to the Liverpool Select Vestry, to the Poor Law Commission, acknowledging their earlier letter of enquiries and enclosing a completed response. Answer to question 3. Liverpool has been regulated by a select vestry since 1821 (further details given). Answer to question 6. There are few workhouse rules. Some details on pauper employment are given. Answer to question 7. No paupers are farmed or contracted for in the parish. Most articles are purchased through contracts given by public notice (further details are given). A committee has control and supervision of giving orders and the passing of accounts. Answer to question 11. The following are salaried officers. Treasurers' Office: William Dickson, Treasurer; James Dickson, Clerk; and John Walthew, Thomas Ravenshaw, William Middleton, William Gibson, Thomas Ellerton, Zachariah B Houghton, Charles Hart and Thomas Musgrove; all collector of rates. Overseers Office: Anthony Black, Overseer; Edward Grey, Clark; William Whiting, Clerk; Benjamin Baldwin, Visitor of the Poor; Benjamin Riding, Visitor of the Poor; Edward Felton, Constable and John Hewitt, Constable. Magistrates Office: George Forwood, Assistant Overseer; John Evans, Clerk and Thomas Tyson, Clerk. Rate Book Office: George P Forwood, Rate Book Clerk. Select Vestry Office: John Mackinlay, Assistant Overseer, Secretary; and Edward Griffiths, Attendent on the Select Vestry. Workhouse: Reverend William Tyrer, Chaplain; James Dowsall Governor; Mary Dowdall, Matron; Ann Todd and Mary Gregory, Assistants to the Matron; Thomas Barker and Charles Cottingham, Governors Clerks; William Mason, Schoolmaster; John Smith and wife, Gatekeepers, Robert Jones, Barber, Workhouse and Fever House: Brerton Nightingale, Resident House Surgeon. Poor Law Union Number 220. Counties: Lancashire.
