Content
Folio 137. Letter from [illegible], Surgeon, Liverpool, to the Poor Law Commission, complaining of the irregularities of the overseers of the poor. He made out a certificate for a poor person which was ignored and the pauper left unaided for two days until a certificate was obtained from another [unqualified] physician. He asks that the overseers are written to to say they are acting illegally in their appointments; and that medical officers should be graduates of Oxford or Cambridge, a licentiate of the College of Physicians of the Apothecaries Society, and that they cannot refuse the certificate of any individual qualified by those diplomas. Annotated draft letter: that the Commission will not interfere with any parochial medical officers appointment except where the general provision of the Poor Law Amendment act are in accordance. They trust the various medical acts will protect the public from unqualified medical practitioner. Poor Law Union Number 220. Counties: Lancashire.
