Letter from John Mackinlay, Secretary of the Liverpool Select Vestry, to the Poor Law Commission, forwarding the books and documents requested in their earlier communication and expressing a desire that if any further clarification or additions are needed, they will willingly supply them. Annotated: acknowledge and thank. Enclosed: Blank pages from a register of apprentices. Parish apprentice indenture for John Williams, pauper child, to William Thompson, Shoemaker, Manchester, 1835. Undertaken by John Heywood Turner and Francis Haywood, and Joseph Gibbons, Raymond William Houghton, and William Alexander Smith, Churchwardens and Overseers, before James Aspinall and Peter Bourne, Magistrates. Parish apprentice indenture for John Edwards, pauper child, to Robert Jones, Silk Manufacturer, Macclesfield, [Cheshire], 1835. Undertaken by John Heywood Turner and Francis Haywood, and Joseph Gibbons, Raymond William Houghton, and William Alexander Smith, Churchwardens and Overseers, before James Aspinall and Peter Bourne, Magistrates. Examination of John Keightley, Tailor, December 1834. Married to Mary Keighley, and has a family of three children. Initially from Gargraves, [Yorkshire West Riding], and was married there to Mary Robinson in 1827. His father was John Keightley and his mother Margaret Keightley. Born in the house of William Thompson at Mill Hill. He was affiliated to Peter Goodwin of Skipton. Sworn before James Aspinall and Peter Bourne, Magistrates on the complaint of Joseph Gibbons, [Raymond William Houghton, and William Alexander Smith], Overseers. Pages from [register] of examinations listing: James Cooper, Henry Harding, Mathew Jones, Hugh Evans, John Jones, William Evans, Henry Lings, Thomas Gardiner and Abraham Smith. Pages from a document 'Removals on Liverpool, listing: [Mary ------n] and her five children, James Jones, his wife and three children; Jane Crosbie and her four children. Form of intent by Liverpool to the parish officers of Pownall Fee, Cheshire, to apply to two Cheshire magistrates to allow the apprenticeships of: [--- Speedy], Sarah Reece, [--- Ward, ---- Pattinson, Jane Melling, ---- Lightfoot], Dorothy Cardwell, [---- Budden, ------Ireland, ---- Warhurst and ---- Harrison]. To be apprenticed to [Robert Hyde Grey], John Grey and Samuel Grey, Cotton Spinners. Signed J H Turner, J Haywood, Joseph Gibbons and R W Houghton. Form of intent by Liverpool to the parish officers of Oldham, Lancashire, to apply to two Cheshire magistrates to allow the apprenticeships of John Hall. To be apprenticed to Joseph Graves, [Fustian Weaver]. Signed J H T [J H Turner], J H [J Haywood], J G [Joseph Gibbons] and R W H [R W Houghton]. Information and complaint of George Forwood, Assistant Overseer. James McNeil, late of 3rd Regiment of Foot, Chelsea Pensioner. His wife and family are now chargeable to the poor rates. Sworn before James Aspinall and Peter Bourne, Magistrates. Printed letter from James Aspinall and Peter Bourne, Magistrates, to the Chelsea Hospital, regarding the complaint of George Forwood, Overseer, that James McNeil, late of 3rd Regiment of Foot, Chelsea Pensioner, has let his wife and family to be chargeable to the poor rates. His next payment should be made out to them. Form singed [marked] by William Hartwell, late of 3rd Regiment of Foot, Chelsea Pensioner, assigning the next payment of pension, given for the loss of his right leg, to the Liverpool poor law authorities. Signed in the presence of James Aspinall, Magistrate. Page from 'Lunatics Register' listing: James Jones and Mary Ellams. Certificate signed 'J C' that 'R H' is of insane mind and to be confined in a lunatic asylum. Printed letter from J A and P B [James Aspinall and Peter Bourne], Magistrates to the Liverpool overseers, that 'R H' should, by the recommendation of 'J C', Medical Practitioner be taken to the Lancashire Lunatic Asylum. Certificate signed 'H B', Surgeon, that 'W H' is of insane mind and to be confined in the Lancashire Lunatic Asylum. Printed form stating that 'A B' Assistant Overseer, has sworn that 'W H' is of insane mind. His last place of settlement was Manchester, and he has no estate from which to pay for his upkeep in the Lancashire Lunatic Asylum. To be confined in a lunatic asylum. Sworn before J A and P B [James Aspinall and Peter Bourne], Magistrates. Printed form to the Manchester overseers, that 'W H' is sworn by 'H B', Surgeon, to be of insane mind. His last place of settlement was Manchester. He has no estate from which to pay for his upkeep in the Lancashire Lunatic Asylum. They are to convey WH to the asylum and to pay costs. Sworn before J A and P B [James Aspinall and Peter Bourne], Magistrates. Printed form that 'A B' Assistant Overseer, Liverpool, swears that 'P W D' appears of insane mind, and by that reason his last place of settlement cannot be ascertained. It is believed that 'A B' has no estate from which to pay for his upkeep in the Lancashire Lunatic Asylum. Sworn before J A and P B [James Aspinall and Peter Bourne], Magistrates. An explanatory note on the workings of several 'Cards' used in the workings of vestry responsibilities. Particular as this relates to relief and finances. Some of the cards are filled up: 'Visit' card, for Ann Eaton; payment card for Mary Simpson, signed John Kilshaw, Chairman; payment card for Elizabeth Bradshaw, signed John James, Chairman; card (back) showing how receipts for relief given to paupers are kept; stone breaking ticket for Mr Dowdall to employ Thomas Fleming, signed John Mackinley; card 'Sent to the Workhouse', made out for Ann Jameieson and two children; admittance ticket for Ann Jamieson and two children; ticket - T Layland, R Bullin and C Bullin, 'On Demand, pay William Simpson or Bearer one hundred + two pounds Paper Number: 15/( for Flour supplied On Account of the Parish of Liverpool Workhouse' - signed John Wilkinson, Chairman; John H Turner and Francis Haywood, Churchwardens; list of the Liverpool Select Vestry for 1834: the rectors of Liverpool, John Heywood Turner, Francis Haywood, Churchwardens, J A Tinne and George Lawrence, Sidemen, Joseph Gibbons, Raymond William Houghton, W Hutchinson and William Alexander Smith, Overseers, also referred to are John KIlshaw, W Nicholas, James Eckersley, A A Dobbs, W Rushton senior, Samuel Martic, Robert Jones, Thomas Taylor, Richard Harbord, Robert Clay, L Utchinson,W T Watson, Robert Musgrove, Richard Warren, M D Lownes, Vestry Clerk and John Mackinley, Secretary.
