Description
Content
Folios 52-59. Letter from George Forwood, Assistant Overseer of the Liverpool Select Vestry, to Thomas F Lewis Poor Law Commissioner, on the subject of rating the owners of small tenements. He states that such ratings had been the cause of many complaints in the past, and although it was impossible to rate them successfully, Liverpool were still bound to pay heavy county rates. He includes a pamphlet setting out the circumstances and action taken to resolve this signed, by order of the select vestry, W P Bushby, Churchwarden in 1830 entitled 'Observations of the Churchwardens, Overseers and Select Vestry of the Parish of Liverpool upon the existing Law 59 Geo 3 Chap 12 as to the Rating of Small Tenements for the Relief of the Poor'. Printed by Wales and Baines, Liverpool. Forwood asks that the contents of his letter be kept private as his suggestions and views could potentially cause him to lose his position by people with vested interests in keeping the status quo. Annotated: 'To be registered under the Rent Rating Tenements', and 'Register under Small Tenements of'. Poor Law Union Number 220. Counties: Lancashire.
