Description

Folio 32 has a table of monthly meteorological observations for the year and a table showing the scale of victualling for the sick.

Folios 33 – 34: General Remarks for 1854. On 3 January Thomas Hood was committed to the deep through a hole in the ice floe. The general health was good to 31 March, the principal cases are mentioned briefly. On 3 February the upper rim of the sun appeared for the first time in 89 days. Plans were made for parties to be despatched from the Intrepid and the Resolute for the North Star, reducing the complements to 20 and 30 respectively and enabling the remaining provisions to last until May 1855. Travelling parties went out to communicate with the North Star, to check the position and state of HMS Investigator, to search for HMS Enterprize and to communicate with Sir Edward Belcher in Wellington Channel. A party had arrived from HMS Assistance bringing post and informing that Assistance was trapped in ice in Wellington Channel. On 28 April Commander McClintock returned with orders from Sir Edward Belcher to abandon HMS Resolute and Intrepid. A case of rheumatism occurred in a man who had been on Sir James Ross’ expedition and the Austen expedition and had also accompanied Commander McClintock on his 106 day journey the previous year. The case of the surgeon’s hernia is also described. On 15 May 1854 at 7pm, the hatches of HMS Intrepid were caulked down and Commander McClintock, Assistant Surgeon Scott, the Engineer and six men joined the division of sleighs from the Resolute under the command of Captain H Kellett to make the journey to the North Star. They travelled by night to avoid snow blindness and arrived on 28 May 1854, doing the distance in 13 marches. Signed Robert Charles Scott Assistant Surgeon in charge.

Folio 34: Meteorological abstract from the 1 January to 30 April 1854. A table giving monthly minimum, maximum and mean.

Folio 34: List of animals killed by the officers and crews of HMS Resolute and Intrepid between 3 September 1852 and 10 September 1853.
