Description

Folios 1 – 2: Henry Morgan, aged 29, Private Royal Marine; disease or hurt, oblique inguinal hernia. Put on sick list, 27 June 1852, at sea. Discharged, 14 July 1852.

Folio 2: George Murray, aged 46, Ice Quarter Master; disease or hurt, iritis. Put on sick list, 6 July 1852, at sea. Discharged, 1 August 1852.

Folios 2 – 3: Henry Giddy, aged 27, Boatswain’s Mate; disease or hurt, catarrhus diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 14 July 1852, at sea. Discharged, 8 August 1852.

Folios 3 – 5: George Drover, aged 33, Captain of the Forecastle; disease or hurt, pleuritis phthisis. Put on sick list, 7 October 1852, at winter quarters, Dealey Island, Melville Island. Died, 12 December 1852. He had crossed Melville Island from 14 September to 2 October and set out to do so again as Captain of the sleigh Hero on 7 October but was compelled to return, feeling unwell. He was treated by Dr Donnville of HMS Resolute.

Folio 6: Henry Smith, aged 36, Stoker; disease or hurt, fractured rib. Put on sick list, 28 January 1853, at winter quarters, Dealey Island, Melville Island. Discharged, 20 March 1853. Slipped in to the fore hold while surveying the hatchway.

Folios 6 – 7: John Coombes, aged 33, Stoker; disease or hurt, hypertrophy of the heart, pulmonary apoplexy. Put on sick list, 12 May 1853, near Point Nias, North Shore of Melville Island, Hecla and Griper Bay. Died, 12 May 1853. ‘A robust and healthy looking man’. He left with Commander McClintock’s travelling party on 4 April 1853 and joined Monsieur De Bray’s auxiliary party on their return to the ship. He died suddenly on 12 May 1853. There is an account of the journey and his death by the Officer in Charge and a description of his body examined 9 days after his death.

Folios 7 – 8: Robert Ganniclift, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, pleuritis with effusion. Put on sick list, 25 July 1853, at winter quarters, Dealey Island, Melville Island. Discharged, 6 October 1853. He had been on travelling parties from the ship in the previous autumn and spring and had been away for 83 days in that time.

Folios 8 – 14: Thomas Hood, aged 33, Private Royal Marine; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 15 September 1853, off Byam Martin Island. Died, 2 January 1854. He had been travelling and was obliged to return with the auxiliary party through illness, arriving back at the ship on 18 May. There is an account given of him by the officer in charge of the sleigh. He returned to light duty on 31 July but was only employed an hour a day polishing brass work in the engine room ‘and this was given him in order to employ his mind’. He returned to the sick list in September with an acute attack of hepatitis. There is a description of his internal organs examined 14 hours after his death.

Folios 14 – 18: James Wilkie, aged 36, Ice Quarter Master; disease or hurt, bronchitis morbus cordis. Put on sick list, 17 September 1853, in the pack off Point Griffiths. Died, 2 February 1854. During the summer he was not allowed to travel unless there was a medical officer with the party because he had suffered spasmodic stricture of the urethra on a former occasion. He had travelled in May and June to the Bay of [Maugin] with Dr Donnville and had not suffered from his journey. He subsequently went on a short journey and got bronchitis after getting his feet wet. In September he complained of dyspnoea which was increased on going aloft or walking quickly. He was relieved of his duties as ice quarter master, which required his going aloft to view the ice, since the ship was at winter quarters. No post mortem was considered necessary.

Folios 19 – 21: Charles Steel, aged 28, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 23 October 1853, in the ice. Discharged, 12 February 1854. He also developed symptoms of scurvy.

Folio 21: Robert Charles Scott, aged 28, Assistant Surgeon; disease or hurt, oblique inguinal hernia. Put on sick list, 4 May 1854, at sea. Discharged, 6 May 1854. Missed his footing getting out of bed, intending to step onto a chair which had been removed from its usual place. Treated by Dr Donnville and supplied with a truss and a certificate.

Folio 22: Table No 2, A list of men who received wounds or hurts. Henry Morgan, aged 30, Private Royal Marine, oblique inguinal hernia, certificate dated 28 June 1852. Robert Charles Scott, aged 28, Assistant Surgeon, oblique inguinal hernia, no certificate listed.
