Folio 1: James Craigie, aged 41, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 28 November [1857?]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 3 February [1858?]. He suffered diarrhoea from 13 December until he left the ship.
Folios 2-3: Richard Harris, aged 21, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, abscess. Put on sick list, 15 December 1857. Sent to hospital, 11 February 1858. He had suffered similar symptoms in January 1857 and they returned on arrival at the Canton River.
Folio 3: Henry Varnham, aged 48, Captain of the Mast; disease or hurt, contusion of foot. Put on sick list, 25 October 1857. Invalided, 17 March 1858. The limber box of a field gun that he was helping to bring aboard fell on his left foot and ankle.
Folio 3: George Warren, aged 39, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, [10 January 1858]. Invalided, 13 January [1858]. He had been in the boats during the attack on Canton [Guangzhou] and had become very debilitated.
Folio 4: James Arnold, aged 29, Bandsman; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 13 January [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 26 February [1858]. Attacked with dysentery while serving on shore at Canton [Guangzhou] and had been under treatment on board the HMS Assistance.
Folio 4: Alfred Boyse, aged 20, Captain's Steward; disease or hurt, cachexia. Put on sick list, 30 September [1857]. Invalided, 13 January 1858.
Folio 4: Henry Cardale, aged 22, Lieutenant; disease or hurt, syphilitic lepra. Put on sick list, 25 January [1858]. Sent to hospital at Hong Kong, 1 February [1858].
Folio 4: William Prowse, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, amaurosis. Put on sick list, 30 January [1858]. Discharged, 26 February [1858] and subsequently invalided.
Folio 5: William Hailes, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 4 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship at Hong Kong, 23 February [1858].
Folios 5-6: Joseph Treneer, aged 24, Caulker’s Mate; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 5 February [1858]. Discharged, 9 March [1858].
Folio 6: Charles Tavone, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 6 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 26 February [1858].
Folio 6: John Palmer, aged 41, Carpenter's Mate; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 6 February [1858]. Died, 20 February [1858]. He had been twice on the list for the same complaint, contracted at Calcutta in October. There is a description of his intestines examined after death.
Folio 6: Samuel Hutchings, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 17 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 26 February [1858].
Folio 7: George Taylor, aged 33, Stoker; disease or hurt, hepatitis. Put on sick list, 19 October [1857]. Discharged, 7 February [1858]. Returned to the sick list with the same complaint, 17 February [1858]. Invalided, 8 March [1858].
Folio 7: Mr William Anderson, aged 25, Assistant Surgeon; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 17 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 2 March [1858]. Acute rheumatism contracted on the island of 'Wontung'.
Folio 7: James Tomlinson, aged 58, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, debility. Put on sick list, 21 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 6 March [1858]. He had not been in good health for some time and 'was completely worn out and used up'.
Folios 7-8: Samuel Hobbs, aged 36, Stoker; disease or hurt, hepatic abscess. Put on sick list, 22 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, [2 March 1858].
Folio 8: Uriah Toms, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 26 February [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 12 April [1858].
Folio 8: Charles Hornsby, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 26 February [1858]. Sent to hospital, 23 March [1858].
Folio 8: J W Palmer, aged 30, Carpenter's Mate; disease or hurt, continued fever. Put on sick list, 3 March [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 23 March [1858]. Sent to the Hercules because the ship was leaving Hong Kong for the river.
Folio 8: Thomas Jenkins, aged 18, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 7 March [1858]. Invalided, 8 March [1858]. He had suffered diarrhoea in November and a second attack when on shore with the Naval Brigade at Canton in January, for which he was under treatment a month.
Folio 9: Mr William Lewcock, aged 47, Gunner; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, October [1857] and again in [December 1857]. Invalided, 8 March [1858].
Folio 9: William Fairy, aged 32, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 12 March [1858]. Sent to hospital, 23 March [1858].
Folio 9: Francis Richards, aged 24, Marine; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 1 December [1857]. Invalided, 17 March [1858].
Folio 9: Robert Broughton, aged 25, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 19 March [1858]. Sent to the hospital ship at Hong Kong, 3 May [1858].
Folio 9: John Furnell, aged 30, Captain of the Mizzen Top; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 19 March [1858], and sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship the same day.
Folio 9: Richard Harden, aged 46, Quartermaster; disease or hurt, fracture. Put on sick list, 23 March [1858]. Sent to the Hercules Hospital Ship, 1 April [1858]. Fell from the gangway landing on one of the lower deck ports, fracturing his femur. He was so reluctant to be examined that the fracture was not discovered until the following day. The surgeon expresses doubts that he will recover.
Folio 10: Ashley Cooper Key, aged 37, Captain; disease or hurt, cachexia. Invalided, 16 April [1858]. He had been suffering debility since his arrival on the China Station and his appetite had become impaired.
Folio 10: John Milton, aged 48, Ship's Corporal; disease or hurt, dysentery. Put on sick list, 25 April [1858]. Sent to hospital, 3 May [1858].
Folios 10-11: John Cockerell, aged 38, Gunner's Mate; disease or hurt, hepatic congestion. Put on sick list, 27 May [1858]. Sent to hospital, 7 June [1858]. He had suffered remittent fever in April and had been on the sick list a month.
Folio 11: William Halford, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; disease or hurt, catarrh. Put on sick list, 6 June [1858]. Died, 20 June [1858]. Considerable enlargement of both tonsils, his jaw and the side of his neck, leeches were applied and he was given calomel, antimony and opium.
Folio 11: William Weymouth, aged 37, Captain of the Fore Top; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 6 June [1858]. Sent to hospital, 16 July [1858]. The diarrhoea had been contracted at Calcutta and had made several returns.
