Description

Folios 245-246. Letter from Richard Michell Hodge, Clerk to the Guardians of the Truro Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission requesting the Commission's opinion regarding charges made to the parish of Kea in Truro Union. About twenty years ago Henry Michell, Miner, married Mary in the parish of Kea where he was residing and where they continued to reside for several years after the marriage. From Kea they went to live in St Agnes and while living there Mary developed a deranged mind and was taken by her husband for safe custody to Kea workhouse where she was supported at the expense of the parish for a period of twelve months and upwards, after which, her mind improving, she returned to her husband and family in St Agnes. About seven years ago the family moved from St Agnes to [Perranarworthal] in the Falmouth Union, where Michell still resides, and about eight or nine months since Mary was found wandering in Kea by one of the parish's guardians and, under the guardian's order, was admitted into the St Mary workhouse at the expense of the parish of Kea. About three weeks ago Mary was collected from the workhouse and she returned to live with her husband in Perranarworthal but presented herself at St Mary workhouse and was admitted. The guardians of the parish of Kea object to her expense being charges to the parish, contending that she was originally admitted as a casual pauper. Paper Number: 2597/A/1844. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
