Administrative / biographical background

The conduct of negotiations on behalf of the Ministry of Food for the purchase of foodstuffs from the Canadian Government was at first the responsibility of the British Food Mission in Washington. An office was established in Ottawa in 1942 which remained an integral part of the Washington Mission until July 1947 when a separate Mission for Canada was formed. The Canadian Mission remained in being until 30th October 1953 when it was closed because of the virtual cessation of bulk buying of foodstuffs.
