Description
Content
Folios 306-307. Letter from [J Sydney], Cowpen Township, Tynemouth Poor law Union, to Sir John Walsham, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, Stand House], Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne, concerning a meeting of the Cowpen ratepayers held on 7 February 1839. Matthew Dunn, Newcastle, Colliery Viewer, was approved to value Cowpen Colliery. At the meeting on 22 November 1838 William Grace of Whalton, Mr Hawthorn of Newcastle upon Tyne and Mr Brown, Builder, Prudhoe Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, were recommended as valuers of the township. The ratepayers want to deal directly with Walsham and not James L Barker, who will want payment for his services. He also asks if a colliery jointly owned by Mrs Purvis of Newcastle and Mrs Errington, lately of Cowpen, and leased to Mr Longridge can be rated. Annotated: the colliery cannot be rated.
