Description
Content
Folios 272-274. Letter from R Barker [Richard Barker] and James L Barker, Clerks to the Guardians of the Tynemouth Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, forwarding a case for their opinion. The case refers to George Armstrong and his wife. They had separate for about 11 months when she [unnamed} had a bastard male child. The woman and child were chargeable to the Tynemouth township and Armstrong had a warrant taken out against him for deserting his family. Armstrong denied the child was his, after living separate for so long, and the constable provided evidence to the petty sessions that she was found in bed with another man; being brought to court on a separate occasion. The magistrates decided that Armstrong was not liable to maintain his wife and the child. The overseers of Tynemouth ask what they are to do. The couple, although separated, lived in the same township; Tynemouth. Also enclosed is a rough draft letter from Poor Law Commission, to R Barker [Richard Barker] and James L Barker, Clerks to the Guardians of the Tynemouth Poor Law Union, acknowledging receipt of their letter. They state that they agree with the local magistrates in this matter. Paper number: 6823/B/1838. Poor Law Union Number 333. Counties: Northumberland.
