Folios 200-201. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to Joseph Lowndes, Clerk to the Guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union, acknowledging receipt of his letter of 9 January 1846. The Commission cannot give authority for the parish officers to hire offices for their own use or for transaction of parish business, but are prepared to issue an order authorising the guardians to hire premises for their own use at Burslem. Parish officers may hold their meetings in these premises. A form of order for hiring premises is enclosed, for signature by the majority of the Board of Guardians. Draft is initialled W G L [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] Enclosure: Proforma Order by the Poor Law Commission to the guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Union, in accordance with An Act for the Amendment and better Administration of the Laws relating to the Poor in England and Wales, authorising the guardians to hire certain premises by lease. [This document is a copy of an order for the Chorley Poor Law Union, Lancashire, with amendments.] Paper number: 483/B/1846. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
