Description
Content
Folios 153-154. Letter from Joseph Lowndes, Clerk to the Guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, acknowledging receipt of their letter Paper number: 11734/B/1845 of 1 September 1845, in reply to Lowndes' letter of 19 August 1845. The present letter answers the Commission's questions about payment of a salary of £25 per annum to the treasurers. Almost since the formation of the union, the guardians have met with difficulties consequent upon depression of trade, turn-outs of colliers and potters, and riots, so they have had to overdraw the account. The balance is now in the union's favour, but the guardians do not consider that the interest can be relied upon to remunerate the treasurers. Adoption of the order of 21 December 1844 relating to non-resident and non-settled poor has also increased the treasurers' duties. The average amount of the 'Parochial Accounts' for the last seven years would, at a rate of 5 percent per annum, give a sum very close to the proposed salary. The treasurers [Joseph Alcock, John Alcock, George Alcock] will not perform the work for less than £25 per annum. Annotation: Mr Weale [Robert Weale, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner]. There is no objection to the proposal. Paper number: 12640/B/1845. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
