Description
Content
Folios 58-59. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick [Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] regarding the resignation of the relieving officer and, following the meeting of the Board of Guardians on 1 April, replying to their letter of 28 March Paper number: 3097/A/1845. The new relieving officer shall begin his duties and be paid salary as soon as his appointment has been approved by the Commission. The board agrees to pay Dods's [William Dods, Relieving Officer of the Norhamshire district] salary to the end of the midsummer quarter as they considered he would need to provide information to his successor on the circumstances of the paupers, without which the new officer would have difficulty in performing his duties; this they considered would take almost to the end of the quarter and considering Dods' long and faithful service he was justly entitled to the additional payment. The board request that they may pay Dods either the salary as agreed or vote him an equivalent amount. A postscript adds that as the new appointment is due on Tuesday 8 April a reply from the Commission is requested before that date. Annotated: 5 April 1845, for immediate action. To state that the Commission will allow the guardians' arrangement if the guardians will appoint Dods's assistant as the new relieving officer. This will make the arrangement legal. Paper number: 3822/A/1845. Poor Law Union Number 325. Counties: Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed and Northumberland.
