Folios 13-14: Michael Daisy, aged 28, Prisoner; disease or hurt, sore mouth with ptyalism. Put on sick list, 27 June 1835, at sea. Discharged, 1 July 1835. Produced most probably from catarrhal affection and a change of diet and want of exercise. There were several similar cases that could not be ascribed to any other causes. The surgeon observes that [in these cases], 'one or two moderate doses of calomel [combined] with antimonial powder, profuse and long continued salivation, with excessive sore mouth has ensued' but when treating venereal diseases among the guard it has often been difficult to produce that effect. The case of Corporal Lee, who suffered chancres and an indolent bubo, is quoted as an example. He rubbed in and took pills for 10 days with no sore mouth.

He was given large doses of digitalis and slept a great deal. In late July soreness of mouth on the right side grew better but commenced on the right side. Many other prisoners had similar symptoms but not so severely. 'And whether this spontaneous affection of the salivary gland may be attributed to a sudden change of food and indulgence in the free use of tobacco, with circumscribed exercise, on board a transport, I could not give an opinion; having never before been appointed to a convict ship'.
