The soldier [Robert] Shufflebottam, [case no 1], having been only a few days out of jail greatly debilitated and too thinly clothed for the season of the year, and to be out in about a whole night what followed might be expected. According to the surgeon the cases of dysentery were occasioned by the wetness and filth from the water closets as he pointed out that all the cases which occurred were in the beds that the drainage came down on. When the surgeon wrote to the Admiralty he was not aware that the water closets were fitted up by the ship. He thought that surgeons should be informed of any thing of the kind that might immediately apply to the proper quarter for amendment or alteration.
