Description

Folio 34: Richard Hodgson, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, very slight symptoms. Taken ill, 18 December 1819. Treatment continues to folio 35. Discharged 21 December 1819.

Folio 34: John Mills, aged 17, Convict; disease or hurt, contusion, severe bruise on left ankle. Taken ill, 19 December 1819. Treatment continues to folio 36. Discharged 26 December 1819.

Folio 35: James Niblet, aged 35, Soldier; disease or hurt, concussion, fell from the ladder in going from the poop to the quarter deck. Taken ill, 19 December 1819. Treatment continues to folio 36. Discharged to duty, 26 December 1819.

Folio 35: John Sporton, aged 24, Soldier; disease or hurt, sprained and contused ankle. Taken ill, 20 December 1819. Discharged to duty, 21 December 1819.

Folio 35: John Short, aged 17, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, slight headache, pains all over with cough. Taken ill, 24 December 1819. Treatment continues to folio 36. Discharged 28 December 1819.

Folio 36: John Ballantyne, aged 18, Convict; disease or hurt, opthalmia. Taken ill, 25 December 1819. Treatment continues to folio 38. Discharged 7 January 1820.

Folio 36: William Moors, aged 34, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, violent headache, cough and pain of breast, slight thirst, heat and nausea. Taken ill, 27 December 1819. Treatment continues to folio 37. Discharged 5 January 1820.

Folio 36: Note that Daniel O'Brien, John Evans and John Marlborough were detected burning a naked candle in the prison, O'Brien and Evans put in double irons, 'forgave John Marlborough for confessing the truth'.

Folio 37: George Slater, aged 29, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, headache and slight pain of breast, violent cough and general soreness. Taken ill, 2 January 1820. Treatment continues to folio 40. Discharged 28 January 1820.

Folio 37: 3 January, tiller broken, 18 hours to replace. William Richards intoxicated so Thomas Mullen appointed to attend issuing of provisions.

Folio 38: 8 January 1820, inspected five bags of bread damaged by wet and 232 lbs thrown overboard.

Folio 38: 9 January 1820, George Lawford, Thomas Mills, John Powell, and Stephen Griffiths found to be not clean; John Cooper, Richard Sephton, William Wilson and Jacob James, had been fighting; stopped their wine.

Folio 38: John McIntosh, aged 23, Convict; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Taken ill, 9 January 1820. Treatment continues to folio 40, still convalescent when prisoners disembarked, 31 January.

Folio 38: 11 January 1820, Charles Cummins, Seaman, received a severe concussion of the brain. 13 January 1820, John Cooper, Richard Sephton, William Wilson and Jacob James, wine stopped. 14 January 1820, extracted a tooth from John Yates.

Folio 38: John Parker, aged 16, Convict; disease or hurt, epilepsy, received a slight contusion on the leg from a fall and was shortly afterwards seized with violent convulsions and insensibility which continued for several hours. Taken ill, 15 January 1820. Treatment continues to folio 39. Discharged 16 January 1820.

Folio 38: 15 January, Daniel O'Brien and John Evans taken out of irons. 'Observed a marked appearance of land'.

Folio 39: 16 January 1820, saw land at daylight.

Folio 39: George Nutter, aged 26, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, symptoms very slight. Taken ill, 16 January 1820. Discharged 17 January 1820.

Folio 39: John McGregor, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, slight cough, rather troublesome, bowels bound. Taken ill, 17 January 1820. Treatment continues to folio 40. Discharged 25 January 1820.

Folio 39: James Niblet, Soldier, extracted a tooth.

Folio 39: Received a letter of thanks from the prisoners, 17 January 1820.

Folio 39: John Allen, aged 34, Convict; disease or hurt, dysuria, great desire to make water with total inability, considerable pain and tension over the pubis. Taken ill, 18 January 1820. Treatment continues to folio 40, still convalescent when prisoners disembarked, 31 January 1820.

Folio 39: Note, issued a blanket during the voyage to Edward Gibbs and Mathew Griffiths.

Folio 40: 20 January 1820, anchored in Sydney Cove at 9 am.

Folio 40: 26 January, Mr Campbell, the Governor's Secretary, and Mr Hutchinson, Superintendant of Convicts, came on board and inspected the prisoners. Several convicts complain of short rations of pork in the early part of the voyage but had not reported this to the surgeon.

Folio 40: 31 January 1820, prisoners disembarked at 6 am and inspected by Governor Macquarie. Only John Allen and John McIntosh remain convalescent. Signed, James Marr Brydone.

Folio 40: 'I have perused the foregoing medical journal and diary and have every reason to be perfectly well satisfied with the conduct of Surgeon Superintendent Brydone'. Signed L Macquarie, Government House, Sydney. 24 February 1820.

Folio 41: Abstract of the preceding journal being a summary of all the cases contained therein. Continued fevers, 1, of which 1 died on board; Fluxes Diarrhoea, 6; Ulcers, 1; Wounds and accidents, 2; Rheumatism, 1; Pulmonic inflammation, 7; Catarrhs, 40; Phthisis, 1; Erysipelas, 2; Chynanche [cynanche], 5; Opthalmia, 4; Dysuria, 2; Swelled testicle, 2; Stricture, 1; Apoplexia, 1; Epilepsy, 1; Other complaints, 20.
