Description

Folio 17: Vaccinated Lewis Balbirnie, Richard Sephton and Edward Bourton, 19 October 1819. Note dated 23 October 1819 that vaccination did not succeed with any of them.

Folio 18: Joseph Harborne, aged 19, Convict [previously recorded as soldier]; disease or hurt, chynanche [cynanche], violent headache, thirst, soreness of throat. Taken ill, 20 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 20. Discharged [to duty] 28 October 1819.

Folio 18: Thomas Bradbury, aged 18, Convict; disease or hurt, tinea capitis, ichorous and scaly eruption of some months continuance extending nearly over the head. Taken ill, 21 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 21. Discharged 31 October 1819.

Folio 18: Note that several messes complained of bad water, which was found to be very brackish. Good water supplied to 12 messes.

Folio 19: James Watson, aged 24, Convict; disease or hurt, apoplexia, fell down suddenly on deck, felt a good deal of pain in his head before attack, in a state of stupefaction. Taken ill, 23 October 1819. Discharged 24 October 1819.

Folio 19: Removed one 'buzzel' from Peter Rawlings and Robert Bennet, convalescents. Removed one 'buzzel' from Thomas Clark and James Piper, barbers.

Folio 19: George Collins, aged 21, Convict; disease or hurt, pain of side for some days which is increased upon exertion. Taken ill, 24 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 20. Discharged 28 October 1819.

Folio 19: J S Laurence, aged 17, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, headache, thirst and pain all over his body. Taken ill, 25 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 20. Discharged to 29 October 1819.

Folio 19: Several messes complained of not receiving their full allowance of flour, on weighing the smallest portion it was found to be more than the allowance. Permission given to Edward Gibbs, George Nutter and Thomas Warren, in charge of divisions, to remain on deck until 8 in the evening.

Folio 20: William Dexter, aged 39, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, slight headache, thirst, with pains all over. Taken ill, 26 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 21. Discharged 30 October 1819.

Folio 20: John Nixon, aged 27, Convict; disease or hurt, constipated, no stool for 4 days. Taken ill, 27 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 21. Discharged 29 October 1819.

Folio 20: John Short, aged 17, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, violent headache and thirst, soreness all over the body. Taken ill, 28 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 25. Discharged 10 November 1819.

Folio 20: Convicts Jacob James, John Hurley and James Welch, vaccinated. A large marlin spike found in a berth of one of the messes, Edward Gibbs insolent, put in double irons and dismissed from the charge of a division.

Folio 21: Robert Edney, aged 18, Convict; disease or hurt, bruised and lacerated fingers by the chime of a cask. Taken ill, 29 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 25. Discharged 12 November 1819.

Folio 21: John McIntosh, Convict, appointed to charge of a division.

Folio 21: Henry Cresswell, aged 22, Soldier; disease or hurt, catarrh, slight headache, thirst with severe cough. Taken ill, 30 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 22. Discharged to duty, 2 November 1819.

Folio 21: Charles [William] Burrell, aged 25, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, slight headache, great thirst, loss of appetite, belly bound. Taken ill, 31 October 1819. Treatment continues to folio 29. Discharged 27 November 1819.

Folio 21: All prisoners mustered and found to be clean except for William Fowler. Prayers and a discourse from Lawson's Sermons, John Allen, Joseph Williams, George Lawford, Richard Perry and William Smith, prisoners, all absented themselves from divine service. John McIntosh allowed to remain on deck until 8 in the evening.

Folio 22: 1 November. Boys punished with one dozen lashes each; J S Laurence, for stealing; John Stewart, John Little, Duncan Campbell, and Samuel Maggs, for disobedience and improper language. William Harris given seven lashes for disobedience and improper language. One 'buzzel' removed from James Robertson, Robert Edney, John Parker, John Charters, Frederick Wilson and John Wilson, all boys, for good behaviour.

Folio 22: Robert Bennet, aged 17, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, slight headache and thirst, belly bound, full and tense. Taken ill, 1 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 23. Discharged 5 November 1819.

Folio 22: Thomas Jones, aged 19, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, violent headache, slight thirst and pain in the back of the neck. Taken ill, 2 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 25. Discharged 10 November 1819.

Folio 22: One 'buzzel' removed from William Burrel. One 'buzzel' removed from Edward Gibbs because of swelling in his leg. Irons removed from Henry Nicholson because of bad legs.

Folio 23: George Lawford, aged 20, Convict; disease or hurt, excoriation of the testicles and thighs. Taken ill, 4 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 24. Discharged 9 November 1819.

Folio 23: Second Officer Mr Wilson complained of Benjamin Taylor, Convict, being insolent in respect of his messes allowance of flour. Allowance was found to be slightly high but, at the request of Mr Wilson, Benjamin Taylor was forgiven.

Folio 23: 4 November. One 'buzzel' removed from men in charge of messes; William Dexter, William Moors, Henry Dark, John Nixon, William Maxwell, James Welch, Silas Pearson and William Price.

Folio 23: Casks of pease, flour and butter opened, 20 lbs [of butter?] thrown overboard as unfit for use, the rest issued though not good, 5 November 1819.

Folio 24: William Barlow, aged 30, Convict; disease or hurt, violent pain of his ear. Taken ill, 6 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 26. Discharged 13 November 1819.

Folio 24: Cask of cheese opened and found to be 'very much decayed'.

Folio 24: Edward Evans, aged 17, Convict; disease or hurt, catarrh, violent pain in his head, thirst, belly bound. Taken ill, 7 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 26. Discharged 14 November 1819.

Folio 24: Prevented from reading prayers by rain, issued lemon juice and sugar.

Folio 24: John Nixon, aged 27, Convict; disease or hurt, constipated, has not had any passages in his bowels for six days. Taken ill, 7 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 25. Discharged 9 November 1819.

Folio 24: John Roberts, aged 40, Convict; disease or hurt, rheumatism, much pain in his back and legs. Taken ill, 8 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 25. Discharged 10 November 1819. One 'buzzel' removed.

Folio 25: 9 November, Edward Gibbs's 'buzzel', removed and enlarged.

Folio 25: 10 November 1819, note that the captain 'neglected the opportunity of sending letters to England'. 11 November 1819, 'prevented from mustering by the work of the ship', John Roberts reports much pain in his back.

Folio 25: William Richards, aged 44, Convict; disease or hurt, strictures. Taken ill, 12 November 1819. Treatment continues to folio 27, no discharge date recorded but re-enters sick list 4 December 1819, folio 31, with catarrh.Had a discharge from his urethra some years previously treated by injection, for some months had his urine pass in a very small sometimes divided stream.
