Description

Folios 1-2: case no 1, John Philpot, aged 21, soldier of the guard; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, catarrhus, headache, stiffing of the nose and head, eyes suffused, cold shiverings and thirst with much lassitude, skin hot and dry, tongue white; put on sick list 18 November 1841, discharged 10 December 1841 to duty.

Folios 2-3: case no 2, Thomas Green, aged 45, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, apoplexia, he was of a full habit, fell instantaneously on the prison deck in a fit of apoplexy, he was immediately removed to hospital and blood was extracted from his arm and three calomel pills given, followed by Sol. Sulph. Magnes at 8 pm. (this produced three copious evacuations), his hair cut, and clothes dipped in vinegar and water applied on the head through the night; put on sick list 21 December 1841, died 26 December 1841 at 11:30 am.

Folios 3-5: case no 3, William Gilbert, aged 19, soldier; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, pneumonitis, pain all over, oppression of the chest, cough, lassitude, stuffing of the nose and severe headache increased when cough, bowels constipated; put on sick list 27 December 1841, discharged 17 January 1842 to duty.

Folios 5-6: case no 4, Mark Fitzgerald, aged 64, prisoner; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, atrophia, on mustered was observed to be feeble and weak on examining into his state I found nothing but debility, no ach nor pain, he only admitted that his appetite not so good, pulse regular, tongue clean, bowels often confined, but he said is habitual to him; put on sick list 28 December 1841, died 10 January 1842 at 4 am.

Folios 6-7: case no 5, James Shiel, aged 24, prisoner; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, colica bilious, complained of purging violent tormina and vomiting, pulse 94 soft and regular, tongue coated, thirst; put on sick list 30 December 1841, discharged 6 January 1842 from list.

Folios 7-9: case no 6, John Donohoe, aged 23, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, phthisis pulmonalis, he was of a spare habit and appeared much emaciated, complained of troublesome cough when laying down in bed and when gets up, had it in Kilmainham Jail, but worse when he embarked on the ship, bowels regular, pulse small 94 regular, tongue clean, expectorates generally very easy, no pain in the chest, said his perspiration profusely during the night and always very thirsty, appetite very good but dislike his rations; put on sick list 30 December 1841, died 20 February 1842 at 11:30.

Folio 10: case no 7, Patrick Doran, aged 21, convict; taken ill at [sea?]; sick or hurt, pleuritis, was attacked with difficulty of breathing, short dry cough, acute lancinating pain in the left side, pulse 100 strong full and regular, tongue moist and covered whitish, skin in a state of perspiration. He was a strong robust constitution, height about 6 feet 4 inches, breadth in proportion, great anxiety of countenance; put on sick list 22 January 1842, discharged 2 February 1842 from list.

Folios 11-12: case no 8, John Philpot, aged 21, soldier of the guard; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, catarrh, violent headache and oppressed breathing, pain in the chest and shoulders, hard dry cough, and stuffing of the head, pulse 89 soft, tongue coated whitish but moist, bowels constipated, profuse perspiration, caught cold sleeping on deck on his guard; put on sick list 31 January 1842, discharged 25 February 1842 to duty.

Folios 13-14: case no 9, Robert McAllister, aged 24, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, syphilitic rheumatism, he called at the hospital for a wash for his throat and fauces, at the time he embarked he says he had ulcers but was persuaded to go on the voyage for nothing, but a sea voyage would make a complete cure. There was a small ulcer on the left tonsil and the bones of the palate are much diseased, a gargle of strong decoction of cinchona; put on sick list 31 January 1842, discharged 9 March 1842 to convict's barracks at Hobart Town.

Folio 15: case no 10, Patrick McDermott, aged 30, convict; taken ill at [sea?]; sick or hurt, pneumonia, rather stout made - about 7 this morning I was sent for and found him sitting with hands on his knee stating that he was suddenly attacked about an hour before with extreme difficulty of breathing - on previous evening had cold chills, headache and some cough with some pain and sense of fullness all over the chest, at present breath quick hurried and with the utmost anxiety, his face and hands livid with little or no cough, pulse 106 irregular also small and weak; put on sick list 16 February 1842, died 17 February 1842 at 8.30 pm.

Folio 16: case no 11, John Glannan, aged 41, convict; taken ill at [sea?]; sick or hurt, catarrh, attacked last evening with symptoms of pyrexia, had caught a cold when on deck being ill clothed, bowels said to be regular, pulse 89 moderately full and regular, tongue clean, thirst; put on sick list 26 February 1842, discharged 4 March 1842 from list.
