Folios 311-313. Letter from Joseph Lowndes, Clerk to the Guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, concerning the diet of workhouse inmates, approving the draft order issued by the Commissioners subject to changing the manner of distributing butter and sugar to aged paupers. Instead of a weekly allowance of five ounces of butter and seven ounces of sugar being distributed at one time, and consumed speedily, these allowances should be issued on a daily basis over the period of a week. Enclosed is amended draft dietary order, listing ingredients for workhouse food/diet, including soup, broth, lobscouse, porridge, gruel and puddings. Included is weekly dietary allocation for paupers over 60 years of age, children under 9 years of age, children over 9 years of age and the sick; describing amounts of different foods given. Amendments as Joseph Lowndes' letter. Annotated: Mr Lumley [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission] to put forward the order making the alteration as respects butter and sugar. 13 February 1841 Paper number: 1598/B/1841.
