Folios 292-296. Letter from J P Harding of Burslem, Solicitor to the Guardians, to the Poor Law Commission, dealing with the sale of the old poor house at Wolstanton. Enclosed are title deeds and an abstract of title and sale of parish property forms 1 and 2. Enclosure Sale of Parish Property form 1: The Wolstanton Parish Officers and inhabitants request the guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Union to apply to the Poor Law Commissioners for consent to sell the freehold building, formerly the parish workhouse, near the Marsh in Wolstanton with its land and appurtenances, containing about 2060 sq yds of land. The property is worth about £500 and is falling into disrepair. The proceeds of sale will be used as a contribution to the union workhouse. Signed: Edward Wood and Richard Ledward, Churchwardens; Joseph Harding, Overseer; George Goodwin, John Taylor, Henry Neil, Edward Powell, George Wood and George Johnson. Enclosure Sale of Parish Property form 2: The guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Union request the Poor Law Commissioners for consent to sell the said premises [see form 1 above]. Sealed with the guardians' seal and witnessed by Joseph Lowndes. Enclosure: Abstract of title. Abstract stems from March 1793 when following a meeting of the vestry and principal inhabitants of Wolstanton parish the property was purchased for the sum of £110 5s from William Turner and vested in Luke Bennet, James Godwin, Thomas Yoxall, William Robinson and James Perry, with authority for them to borrow £200 to purchase and alter the premises. Annotated: issue 'Sale Meeting Order' and return deeds and abstract WGL [William Golden Lumley, Assistant Secretary to the Poor Law Commission]. 21 December 1840 Issued 13 V (6 copies) sent with deeds 14 January 1841. Resolution consenting to sale dated 28 January 1841. Issue sale order WGL. 5 February 1841. Paper number: 13598/B/1840. Poor Law Union Number 415. Counties: Staffordshire.
