Description

Folio 7: John Cooper, aged 27, ordinary [seaman]; disease or hurt, intermittent fever. Taken ill, 25 October 1800, off Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 3 November 1800.

Folio 8: Bryan O'Reilly, corporal of marines, aged 23; disease or hurt, rheumatism, acute, shivering fever wandering, gnawing pains, with swelling and redness in the part affected, costiveness, the pain worse towards night and when warm in bed. Taken ill, 26 October 1800, off Whitstable. Discharged to the hospital ship at Sheerness, 1 November 1800. Had been taking some medicine he got from shore for the venereal disease and caught a violent cold, the vessel being very damp. Had two buboes in the groin with ulcers on the prepuce and glands and his throat. It was thought best to send him to the hospital, there not being conveniences on board for such a case.

Folio 8: William Baker, aged 24, Marine; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea, a little fullness of the lips of the urethra, inflammation with discharge from the urethra of a whitish matter, attended with pain and smarting in making water. Taken ill, 4 November 1800, off Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 17 November 1800.

Folio 9: James Lovick, aged 26, Marine; disease or hurt, intermittent fever. Taken ill, 24 November 1800, Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 5 December 1800.

Folio 9: Thomas Barberson, aged 58, Boatswain's Mate; disease or hurt, rheumatism chronic. Taken ill, 4 December 1800, Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 12 December 1800.

Folio 9: Daniel Potter, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, cold and cough, pain in his breast with a dry cough, and hot, with fever towards night. Taken ill, 14 December 1800, Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 23 December 1800. Cured with sudorifics and pectorals and afterwards the bark.

Folio 9: Joseph Parker, aged 21, Marine; disease or hurt, cold and cough, a troublesome cough, no pain, nausea, a little fever and thirst. Taken ill, 16 December 1800, Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 24 December 1800.

Folio 9: Robert Byron, aged 22, Clerk; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea. Taken ill, 16 December 1800, Whitstable. Discharged to duty, 27 December 1800.

Folio 9: John Walkden, aged 30, Sergeant of Marines; disease or hurt, accident, a violent contusion on his loins and right thigh, from a fall. Taken ill, 17 December 1800, Whitstable. Discharged to the hospital ship at Woolwich, 3 January 1801. Was getting better until on 2nd January at Woolwich he was taken with a violent pain in his loins. He was worse the next day and the vessel going into dock, he was sent to the hospital. 'He was a good sober man gave him a smart ticket for the hurt he received'.

Folio 10: Thomas Heath, aged 21, Marine; disease or hurt, cold and cough. Taken ill, 1 January 1801, Woolwich. Discharged to duty, 10 January 1801.

Folio 10: John Whiting, aged 23, Landsman; disease or hurt, fever, pain in his head and back, shivering, heat, sickness, fever, costiveness. Taken ill, 10 January 1801, Woolwich. Discharged to the hospital, 19 January 1801. When asked if he had ever had small pox he replied no, so the surgeon concluded it was small pox he had.

Folio 10: Thomas Walton, aged 27, Marine; disease or hurt, venereal. Taken ill, 4 February 1801, Woolwich. Discharged to the hospital, 6 February 1801.Since the vessel was going to sea and the weather very cold, he was sent to hospital.

Folio 10: Henry Cain, aged 24, Ordinary [Seaman]; disease or hurt, ulcered leg. Taken ill, 14 March 1801, Poorfleet [Purfleet]. Discharged to duty, 28 March 1801.

Folio 10: George Whitehead, aged 25, Second Master and Pilot; disease or hurt, rheumatism and venereal, ulcer on the prepuce, buboes in the groin and ulcered throat. Taken ill, 17 March 1801, Woolwich. Discharged to sick quarters at Woolwich, 19 March 1801.He had not done as the surgeon desired and was getting worse. He went on shore and got drunk.

Folio 11: Daniel Potts, aged 27, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, ulcered leg. Taken ill, 27 March 1801, Woolwich. Discharged to duty, 12 April 1801.

Folio 11: John Cranston, aged 23, Able Seaman; disease or hurt, intermittent fever. Taken ill, 4 April 1801, Woolwich. Discharged to duty, 11 April 1801.

Folio 11: Abstract of the preceding journal, being a summary of all the cases contained therein. Continued fevers, 5, of which 3 were sent to the hospital; Fluxes, 6, of which 1 was sent to the hospital; Ulcers, 5; Wounds and accidents, 1, which was sent to the hospital; Rheumatism, 7, of which 4 were sent to the hospital; Pulmonic inflammation, 3; Intermittent fevers, 5; Venereals, 6, of which 1 was sent to the hospital; Cold and cough, 3.
