Folios 2-3: Sick book kept on board the Earl Grey male convict ship between 15 July 1836 and 9 January 1837 during the voyage from Deptford, Kingstown [Dun Laoghaire] and the Cove of Cork to Sydney, New South Wales, William Evans, Surgeon Superintendent, (names and details follow):
Folios 4-5: John Coates, aged 24, Private Soldier; disease or hurt, pneumonia. Put on sick list, 30 July 1836. Discharged, 16 August 1836. Recently discharged from the Military Hospital at Chatham, where he had been receiving care for pulmonary affection.
Folios 5-6: John Reed, aged 6, Soldier's Son; disease or hurt, cynanche trachealis. Put on sick list, 30 July 1836, on passage to Ireland. Discharged, 12 August 1836. Seized the evening before with hoarseness, pyrexia and a 'singing' dry cough.
Folio 6: John Stevens, aged 37, Convict; disease or hurt, haemoptysis. Put on sick list, 2 September 1836. Discharged, 4 October 1836. He had suffered a constant cough for the last 18 months but had not previously spat blood. His condition was improved greatly on arriving in warmer weather.
Folios 6-7: Terence Riley, aged 30, Convict; disease or hurt, enteritis. Put on sick list, 30 August 1836. Discharged, 12 September 1836.
Folio 8: Patrick Bryan, aged 34, Convict; disease or hurt, ascites. Put on sick list, 12 September 1836. Died, 11 October 1836. He had been in the prison hospital at Cork for 8 months with anasarca and was discharged shortly before embarkation on the Earl Grey. The surgeon was not told of this illness and it seemed 'he was not quite well' when he started the voyage. He developed symptoms of scurvy within 3 weeks and was put on the hospital diet. On 24 September the anasarca reappeared in his lower extremities, spread to his thighs and finally his lungs became affected with dyspnoea. From 1 October he refused all food except a roasted potato with a little butter and wine or beer. On 11 October he woke just before 5am, 'told the nurse he had slept exceedingly well, then turned and died without a groan'.
Folios 8-10: Michael Coyle, aged 35, Convict; disease or hurt, dysenteria scorbutica. Put on sick list, 16 September 1836. Died, 14 October 1836. Michael Coyle and his brother, John Coyle, had both been convicted of 'shooting at the person' in the last Spring assizes and had been farmers beforehand. The conviction had affected Michael Coyle's mind, which had become 'wandering and continually dwelt upon an only son whom he had left behind'. He was greatly emaciated when he embarked but with no appearance of any organic affection. His appetite fell off and before the middle of September he showed symptoms of scurvy.
