Description

Folios 6-7: case no 5, James Smyth, aged 26, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, apoplexia, he was very robust habit, was seized with violent attack of epilepsy; put on sick list 12 December 1842, died 14 December 1842 at about 9:30 am.

Folios 7-8: case no 6, Patrick Molloy, aged 20, convict; taken ill at sea; sick or hurt, dysenteria, extremely emaciated and of spare habit of body complained of frequent purging sense of general debility; put on sick list 17 December 1842, died 9 January 1843 at about 5 pm.

Folio 8: nosological return of cases mentioned in the journal.

Folios 9-10: Surgeon's general remarks. The Navarino sailed from Deptford on 20 August 1842 and arrived at Kingstown, Ireland on 31 August 1842 when she immediately commenced receiving convicts on board. By the 10 September 1842 embarkation was completed. Regarding the fatal case of dysentery (case no 6), in which the patient had previously suffered severely from the same disease, according to his own statement and was evident from the post mortem examination. The case of apoplexy (case no 5) appeared to arise solely from a rupture of one of the cerebral vessels during an attack of epilepsy.
