- Folio 219. Draft letter from Poor Law Commission to S C Hawkes, Clavering, [Essex], acknowledging letter of 13 August 1844 informing him that those competent to give orders for medical attention to the poor are the Board of Guardians, a relieving officer and overseer of the poor. Overseers can give orders in cases of midwifery only in cases of 'sudden and urgent necessity'. Payment is made by the guardians or their relieving officer where they have given the orders. The overseers will pay the medical officer in the urgent cases, and the auditor will determine whether this is justified when he makes his audit. Paper number: 12109/A/1844. Poor Law Union number 167. Counties: Hertfordshire and Essex.
