Description

Folios 25-26: William Tann, aged 38, Prisoner; disease or hurt, hydrothorax. Put on sick list, 24 September 1835, at sea. Died, 8 October 1835. On 9 September he had asked for bandages for oedema of his feet and ankles. He had been in the hospital in the hulk for disease of the lungs and his feet had been swollen since, he concealed this by removing his bandages when examined prior to embarkation. He had been very sea sick since 16 September.

Folio 26: Thomas Young, aged 27, Prisoner; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 5 October 1835, at sea. Died, 26 October 1835. 'A thin, delicate, consumptive looking prisoner, who has suffered frequently from disease of the lungs and cough'. He had been ill some days and when he complained had a cough, weakness, thirst, pain of the right side and a pulse of 140. He became delirious and struggled with the attendants. His pulse was constantly between 120 and 140 the duration of his illness. He died suddenly while being assisted to the night chair.

Folios 27-28: Abraham Noster, aged 32, Prisoner; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 6 October 1835, at sea. Died, 7 December 1835. Complained of cough and shortness of breath, to both of which he had been occasionally subject. His brother was on board and said that he had lost flesh and strength in a remarkable way but was very anxious to accompany his brother.

Folios 28-29: Daniel Delaney, aged 30, Soldier of the Guard; disease or hurt, mania. Put on sick list, 1 December 1835, at sea. Discharged, [8 December 1835]. He had complained the previous week of headache but returned to duty after 4 days. He complained of irregular, very severe headaches, sometimes lasting an hour or more and a blister was applied to each temple and he was given a purgative. On the evening of 2 December his wife reported to the surgeon that he had been acting strangely for more than a fortnight. The previous night he had risen in the middle of the night to look for his musquet, saying he was going to shoot someone but not saying who. He had also sharpened his knife and she was afraid his mind was affected. She gave the knife to the surgeon. On 8 December he asked Captain Potter and the surgeon for his knife back [but was not given it]. Half an hour later he attacked his wife, trying to bite her shoulder. Half a dozen men held him while the surgeon bled him of 40 ounces. From this time there were no further paroxysms but he was not entrusted with his knife or arms for the rest of the voyage.

Folio 29: Abstract of the preceding journal, being a summary of all the cases contained therein, nosologically arranged.
