Description

Folio 1: Blank.

Folio 2: 25 June 1821, Deptford, joined Hindostan, ship's crew employed receiving stores and provisions.

Folio 2: 7 July 1821: cast off from the Narcissus hulk and run down to Gravesend.

Folio 2: 8 July 1821: weighed down to the Nore and came to an anchor.

Folio 2: 9 July 1821: weighed and stood through the Downs the river pilot left at Deal.

Folio 2: 11 July 1821: at 6am pilot came on board and brought us to an anchor at Spithead at 3pm. Reported the ship's arrival to Lieutenant Chessman, Agent for Transport, as well as officially to commissioners of HM Navy.

Folio 2: 12 July 1821, preparing to receive the Guard and convicts.

Folio 2: 13 July 1821: At 3pm. Guard embarked consisting of ensign Edward King, one sergeant, two corporals and twenty four privates belonging to the 30th, 48th and 69th Regiments, two women and five children. At 8:30pm Received one hundred and fifty two male convicts from the Leviathan and York convict ships in Portsmouth harbour.

Folio 2: 14 July 1821: At 9am visited prison room, convicts very orderly. Issued out provisions to guard and convicts agreeable to the schedules received from Captain Young, Agent for Transports, Deptford. At 2pm Earl Spencer and party of gentlemen came on board and inspected the prisoners and victualling and they seemed perfectly satisfied with the ample allowance provided for them by government.

Folio 3: 17 July 1821: At 6am the mate of the York came on board with a man named Thomas White sentenced to transportation for life in lieu of Thomas White who embarked last Friday, sentenced to transportation for seven years.

Folio 3: 18 July 1821: At 6pm J Cooper on my entering the hospital, found him extremely drunk and insolent making use of most infamous language ordered him to be handcuffed. John Seabeck, James Tain and Michael Dolan, convicts, catarrh with constipation of the bowels.

Folio 3: 19 July 1821: All ships at Spithead dressed with colours and at one o'clock a Royal salute was fired in honour of the Coronation, released J. Cooper from handcuffs appointed delegates amongst the prisoners to see provisions etc. weighed, John Seabeck, James Tain and Michael Dolan much better.

Folio 3: 20 July 1821, Joseph Wilkin, pleuritic stitch; John Braham, William Woodcock and Joseph Scolding, slight catarrh with constipation.

Folio 3: 21 July 1821: ordered for the use of the hospital, two razors, two pewter bedpans, two urinals, two spitting pots, three tin tea kettles, nine saucepans and eighteen pint mugs. Great many of the prisoners have been attacked since yesterday with catarrhal affections and cynanche. John Seabeck, James Tain and Michael Dolan discharged from the sick list. John Braham cynanche much better, William Woodcock and Joseph Scolding convalescent, Joseph Wilkin slight difficulty of breathing physic, operated well.

Folios 3-4: 22 July 1821: required of the master for the use of the hospital, calico twenty yards, flannel ten yards, sheets seven in number, John Braham continues getting better medicines as before. William Woodcock and Joseph Scolding convalescent, Joseph Wilkin some difficulty of breathing still pulse 83, skin hot, tongue foul, bowels free.

Folio 4: 23 July 1821: John Braham discharged from the sick list, William Woodcock and Joseph Scolding convalescent, Joseph Wilkin pain in the head and limbs.

Folio 4: 24 July 1821, issued one shirt to each prisoners (152), Joseph Wilkin pain in the head quite relieved, George Hewson, convict, was attacked with pain in the head and limbs, nausea and vomiting.

Folio 4: 25 July 1821: Joseph Wilkin was attacked with very acute pain to the right leg extending from the hip to the ankle.

Folio 4: 26 July 1821: Joseph Wilkin pain in the limb continued with slight pyrexia, bowels free, George Hewson convalescent.

Folio 4: 27 July 1821, Joseph Wilkin no alteration continued medicine as before, George Hewson discharged from the sick list. Thomas Linch and James Miller, convicts, complain of headache, nausea and vomiting accompanied with pyrexia. Received despatches for the governor of New South Wales.

Folio 5: 29 July 1821: At 8am weighed and stood out from Spithead, at 2:30pm pilot left and we proceeded on the voyage.

Folio 5: 30 July 1821: Working down Channel, issued two raven duck trousers to the convicts cooks named John Seabeck and John Pople in consequence of their old ones being completely worn out. Joseph Wilkins complains of a great deal of pain the limb with slight pyrexia. Two cooks had their irons taken off yesterday evening.

Folio 5: 1 August 1821:, appointed Samuel Francis to superintend the school established this day in the prison room. Patrick O'Hara, guard, ophthalmia. William Callowhile, headache with throbbing pain, pulse full and hard, bowels slow.

Folios 5-6: 2 August 1821:, Joseph Wilkin free from complaint [but] great debility, George Hewson, convict, acute headache with pyrexia, bowels slow. Sergeant Howley and John Powell (private), griping pain, bowels slow.

Folio 6: 3 August 1821: John Mynard, convict, headache, pyrexia, bowels constipated, James Edlestone, convict, attacked similar to the last, medicines the same.

Folio 6: 4 August 1821, Sergeant Howley and [John] Powell discharged today.

Folio 6: 5 August 1821: James Edlestone discharged from the sick list.

Folios 6-7: 6 August 1821, Cut the irons off Henry King, irons put on others. Took the irons off the following prisoners in consequence of their good behaviour, Thomas Maston, Thomas Gill, Charles Sanstram, J P Gooch and John Sennett. William Callowhill quite well discharged from the sick list.

Folio 7: 7 August 1821, released George Hewson and J Foley from irons for good conduct. John Mynard discharged from sick list.

Folio 7: 8 August 1821, William Callowhill readmitted with acute pain in the head with constipation.

Folio 7: 9 August 1821, James Ranscomb was found with his irons cut yesterday evening he was also very insolent to the sergeant of the guard, put on other pair of irons. George Hewson attacked again with headache and constipation.

Folio 7: 10 August 1821, the following men were released from irons for good conduct, they were also appointed to superintend the cleaning of the prison - B C Clarke, James Knight, George Elson, John Edwards, Michael Dolan, George Onslow, John Seles, John Wordbury, Joseph Sounders, James Dunber, James Wright, James Riley, William Sidney Smith, John Billett, John Knight, John Williams, Samuel Francis. This day Henry Thomas and James Downs were released.
