Description

Folio 19: 6 June 1824, all prisoners in a convalescent state, free women and children 'as well as can be expected'. Children attending school and women employed knitting. The women are obeying the new orders and the Surgeon is satisfied that on returning to the prison at 6pm no 'improper intercourse' has taken place between them and the sailors.

Folio 19: 8 June 1824, all patients doing well, none in the hospital. Warm clothing and shoes returned to the convicts.

Folio 20: 10 June 1824, 7 prisoners have catarrhal affection, all former patients recovering.

Folio 20: 11 June 1824, Mary Cunningham suddenly attacked with pleuritic affection, respiration exceedingly oppressive, pulse quick and small. Described as better on 12 June 1824 with laxative medicine continued. All other patients getting better.

Folio 20: 12 June 1824, all patients improving. Prisoners on deck during the day.

Folio 20: 13 June 1824, all patients nearly well. The recent catarrhal cases have been caused by the change from warm to cold temperature but are nearly all well. There is no one in the hospital. Convicts, free women and children remain on deck all day, if the weather permits, to allow proper ventilation between decks. Blowing fresh and heavy sea prevented divine service. Two prisoners handcuffed for fighting.

Folio 21: 14 June 1824, Mary McCarthy, having been for some time very debilitated, attacked with total loss and diminution of power and sensibility of the lower extremities and a perfect paraplegia. No menstrual discharge for thirteen months. Continues on sick list until arrival, last mentioned 'nearly well' on 16 August 1824 [folio 34]. All prisoners very quiet except [Mary] Rian and Margaret Boyle who are [contriving] and inventing some plans.

Folio 21: 15 June 1824, McCarthy same as yesterday.

Folio 21: 16 June 1824, McCarthy continues as before, all others onboard as well as can be expected.

Folio 21: 17 June 1824, one prisoner handcuffed for abusive language in the prison. Soap issued to convicts and free women. The conduct of [Mary] Rian and Margaret Boyle has been very bad.

Folio 21: 18 June 1824, 'Masterson continues much the same' [not mentioned previously].

Folio 21: Mary Noakes; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 18 June 1824. Better, 19 June 1824 [folio 22].

Folio 21: Mary Tool [Toole]; disease or hurt, febris. Put on sick list, 18 June 1824. Cured, 26 June 1824 [folio 23].

Folio 22: 19 June 1824, Cogan, a free woman, confined with the prisoners for abusive language after having been warned several times.

Folio 22: 20 June 1824, patients continue to improve, heavy seas and blowing hard. Inspected convicts and prison, all found to be clean.

Folio 22: 21 June 1824, more moderate, all convicts and free women's beds on deck, prison and between decks cleaned and properly ventilated.

Folio 22: 22 June 1824, free women and their children are badly clothed and suffer acutely from the cold weather. Charcoal fire used occasionally between decks. All well behaved with the exception of Margaret 'Boil' [Margaret Boyle] and [Mary] Rian who continually endeavour to implicate others and propagate stories while keeping themselves from detection.

Folio 23: 23 June 1824, blowing fresh, unable to have beds on deck. The prison, hospital etc cleaned as well as circumstances would permit.

Folio 23: 24 June 1824, McCarthy worse, paraplegia of the lower extremities and left arm. All kept below by bad weather.

Folio 23: 25 June 1824, prisoners on deck when weather permits.

Folio 23: Daniel McBride, aged 11, a free boy; disease or hurt, had suffered sea sickness since embarking and was greatly reduced, the [digestive] organs unusually disordered, of a scrophulous habit. Put on sick list, 25 June 1824. Died, 27 June 1824 [folio 24].

Folio 23: Anne McDaniel; disease or hurt, 'mental derangement, placed her in a strait waistcoat'. Put on sick list, 26 June 1824. Cured, 8 August 1824 [folio 32]. Entries in the journal simply describe her as 'in a deranged state' or 'perfectly insane', there is no mention of any treatment other than the use of the 'strait waistcoat'.

Folio 24: 27 June 1824, during the week the prisoners have been quite well behaved, a few of the free women have been troublesome. The children have made good progress in their reading and writing. The prison is cleaned every morning before breakfast and occasionally fumigated. The prison door is locked every evening at 7pm, as it has since the start of the voyage, the Surgeon notes that he has every reason to think that no improper intercourse has taken place.

Folio 24: Jane Shaw; disease or hurt, pyrexia and unusual [increased] heat and thirst. Put on sick list, 27 June 1824. Cured, 8 July 1824 [folio 27].

Folio 25: 28 June 1824, the body of Daniel McBride committed to the deep and funeral service performed.

Folio 25: 29 June 1824, blowing very fresh, prison cleaned as well as circumstances would permit.

Folio 25: 30 June 1824, blowing a gale, heavy sea running.

Folio 25: 1 July 1824, the conduct of a few in the prison very bad, Jackson confined in a 'strait waistcoat' for improper conduct.

Folio 26: 2 July 1824, blowing fresh, unable to have prisoners on deck.

Folio 26: 3 July 1824, all patients improving.

Folio 26: 4 July 1824, with the exception of a few bad characters, the prisoners have behaved very well in the last week and there has been no occasion to punish them, occasional quarrelling and abusive language among the free women. The health of all is attributed to allowing them on deck whenever the weather permits and cleaning and ventilating of the prison.

Folio 26: 5 July 1824, all on board are as well as can be expected.

Folio 26: 6 July 1824, blowing very fresh and wet, unable to have beds on deck.

Folio 26: Anne Walsh; disease or hurt, gastritis. Put on sick list, 6 July 1824. Cured, 12 July 1824 [folio 27].
