Administrative / biographical background

The origins of the Inland Revenue Life Assurance and Benevolent Fund Society lay in the Excise Benevolent Fund Society which, with the approval of the Commissioners of the Board of Excise, was established by deed of settlement dated 5 August 1845. Its purpose was to grant annuities and allowances to widows and orphans of the staff of the Board who had effected a life insurance through the Fund with the Atlas Assurance Company, and assigned all bonuses accruing on the policy to the Fund. It also gave assistance to superannuated officers in paying their premiums.

On the merger of the Board of Excise with the Board of Stamps and Taxes in 1849 it was decided to extend the benefits of the Society to all the staff of the newly-created Board of Inland Revenue and this was accomplished by the Inland Revenue Officers Act 1849. From that date, the Society was known as the Inland Revenue Life Assurance and Benevolent Fund Society.

By 1968, due to improved arrangements made by the state for the dependants of civil servants and the increasing sophistication of commercial policies, it was becoming impossible to attract new members, and in October 1972 the Society was wound up.
