2 individual petitions (Richard Holyhead, prosecutor and undersigned by 5 people, witnesses from Handsworth and West Bromwich, Staffordshire; convict and undersigned by 25 people, from Handsworth including prosecutor) on behalf of Walter Harris, labourer, 18 years, convicted at the Stafford Summer Assizes in 1832, for horse stealing, property of Richard Holyhead, collier of Wednesbury, Staffordshire. There is also a covering letter from Joseph Grice of Handsworth Hall supporting petition dated 25 August 1832 and a covering letter from William Littleton of Teddesley enclosing petition dated 31 August 1832. Gaoler's report: 'character not known'. Grounds for clemency: prosecutor petitions on the grounds that the horse was of little value and roamed the lanes, convict noticed horse and started giving it food and did not try to sell it, could have been taken without 'felonious intent', prosecutor was pressed to prosecute by constable of West Bromwich, previous good character; Joseph Grice has employed the convict's father for 24 years and the convict for 2 years and has always found him honest and industrious. Initial sentence: transportation for life. Annotated: [not stated]. GR 31
