Description

1 recommendation list (R Armstrong, overseer, [James Inman], chaplain of the Hardy hulk at Tipner Lake, Portsmouth and John Henry Capper, superintendent) on behalf of:

  • Adam Blake, 29 years, convicted at Winchester on 28 February 1825 for sheep stealing. Initial sentence 14 years. Time served 6 years, 7 months and 3 days. Gaol report: behaved well in gaol. Ship book number 176. Annotated: mitigated to 7 years 31 May 1830. [Name crossed through.]
  • Abraham Mellish, 22 years, convicted at Cambridge on 16 October 1826, for stealing money. Time served: 4 years 11 months and 15 days. Gaol report: bad in prison before and after trial former conduct and connexions of the worst description and think he was an accessory to Grooms Breaking prison. Ship book number 207.
  • Thomas Curtis, 24 years, convicted at Newgate on 31 May 1827, for stealing lead pipe. Time served: 4 years 4 months and 15 days. Gaol report: no known. Ship book number 229.

There is also a letter from Captain Armstrong dated 23 October 1831 stating that the conduct of Abraham Mellish had been particularly good. Grounds for clemency: have served more than half of their respective sentences and good conduct during confinement. Initial sentence: 7 years. Annotated: free pardon 29 October 1831. GQ 17
