Folios 213-216. Copy of the minutes of an inquiry held by the Visiting Committee of the Kidderminster workhouse into the death of Hannah Atkins, workhouse inmate. Report for the Guardians of the Kidderminster Poor Law Union. Present were the Reverend Joshua Fletcher, Mr Beddoes, Mr Cole and Mr B H Woodward. Jane Cooke, Nurse at the workhouse, stated that she had sent Cornelius Ainsworth, inmate, on Saturday [1 May 1841] to ask Thomas Thursfield, Medical Officer of Health for the Kidderminster district, to attend Hannah Atkins, who was seriously ill after her confinement. The governor was busy and the matron was out. Mr Barker, assistant to Thursfield, refused to attend a without a written note giving specific details of the illness. He saw Atkins on Sunday and sent medicine. At 10pm on Sunday Cooke told Margaret Lilley, Schoolmistress at the workhouse, and Charlotte Guest, inmate, that Atkins was dying. Barker attended at 10.30 pm and ordered powders and fomentations. Atkins died at 8am on Monday without the doctor being sent for again. Mary Ann Lilley, Schoolmistress, stated that she had seen Atkins at 10pm on Sunday. She had told Mr Stevens, governor of the workhouse, that Atkins was very ill. The matron came to investigate. Charlotte Guest, inmate, stated that the matron was in the workhouse later on Saturday evening. Mary Ann Stevens, Matron, stated that on being told on Sunday night that Atkins was dangerously ill she had told the governor to send for Doctor Thursfield. On Saturday she had left home at 7pm and returned between 9pm and 10pm. Cornelius Ainsworth, Inmate, stated that he had been sent to bring the doctor at 8pm on Saturday but Barker had refused to attend as the note sent gave no details of the illness. William Cooke, inmate, stated that he had been sent at 11pm on Sunday with a note from the Master for the doctor. Barker had gone with Cooke to the workhouse. Joshua Stevens, Workhouse Master, stated that the nurse had not told him about Atkins' illness. He heard the schoolmistress and Guest discussing Atkins on Sunday and on hearing the matron's report he had sent a note to Doctor Thursfield asking for his immediate attendance. Enclosed is a copy of a statement by Thomas Thursfield, Medical Officer. On Saturday 1 May 1841 Thursfield was away from home. A messenger sent by the nurse asking for his attendance at the workhouse brought no note from the workhouse master, and without this Mr Barker, Medical Assistant, refused to attend. No further message was sent from the workhouse that night. Barker had visited Atkins on Sunday afternoon and on being sent for in the evening had attended immediately. He found Atkins dying. He was surprised that no further request for his attendance had been made. Paper number: 5836/B/1841. Poor Law Union Number 530. Counties: Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
